Re: Ethernet Hub for Simrad/B&G Network?

I use a GS108 in my B&G network. It does the job. It would be nice to be able to filter out for one switch port the mass of UDP packets that come from the Halo radar. These packets overwhelm my...

Balmar Alternator D+ circuit

I understand what happens at the D+ terminal of a typical alternator - it allows current flow to ground for the alternator warning light circuit, and it does this via three diodes each connected to...

Re: Protecting NMEA 2000 bus against lightning strikes

I have also found that the NMEA2000 interface is particularly sensitive to lightning, leaving our AP computer, chart plotter, depth sounder, engine monitor, etc deaf and mute on the network.

Re: Looking for input to decide on AIS transponder

I’m using a Cortex M1-USA for AIS. Will interface fine to any other chart plotter via NMEA2000 or 183. The app that connects to its built in WiFi takes some getting used to, but has some great...

Re: Vesper XB-8000 reduced range

You really need someone ( a ham probably) with a good graphical antenna analyzer to best characterize your antenna cable. It can do far more than simply give an an SWR at one frequency, for example...

Re: KISS-SSB as SSB Ground?

A KISS or facsimile thereof will “work” even if it is far from the most effective counterpoise scheme. You can make something just as effective, and probably more so, by getting some insulated...

Re: Anyone get B&G Triton2 and have regrets?

The most irritating trait of my Triton2 displays is the green banner that pops up to obscure much of the display on alarms, like shallow depth. The alarm goes off and I can’t see the depth reading!...

Re: How to go about SSB Troubleshooting

It could certainly be tested to work by a licensed ham on the ham bands. If it works there, chances are good it can also be made to work on marine HF bands.

Re: Temporary ham/SSB antenna

I just ran bare 3/32 SS “lifeline” type wire up with a spare rope halyard. The rope is an insulator at the top. At the bottom is an easily adjustable length of Dacron line that is the bottom...

Renogy Christmas sale 27-32%discount, recommend for low budget

I have had two Renogy 100w rigid momocrystalline panels on my boat for 5 seasons. When new, I would 104-105 W from each when new under best conditions. Now I never see more than 85 W under the same...

Re: LFP and Alternator settings

Having programmed it, I certainly have no need to keep reprogramming the MC-618. As I said, I’m very happy to be involved with managing the charging the way I do. I only very occasionally take the...

Re: LFP and Alternator settings

I tend to be highly involved with my electrical and electronic systems, so my approach is probably rare amongst cruisers.

I'm using a Balmar MC-618 regulator and Balmar 100 A alternator to charge...

Motorsailing- It seems like magic

You may be able to point higher because increased speed through the water improves the lift provided by your keel and reduces leeway. Sailing too close to the wind with a reduction in boat speed will...

Re: Max time for 100 amp lifepo Batt. w/o charging?

It will depend on how much parasitic draw the BMS has. Usually quite small, but I would not count on it. Why not check it every few months? Put it an a battery charger for a bit if needed, but...

Switch from 12V to 220/110V for internal lights and appliances?

Not quite true. LEDs die when they do not have efficient sinking of their waste heat. This is particularly true of light fixtures not designed specifically for LEDs. Voltage spikes can kill them too....

Re: Iridium Go plus YB3i tracker

I have the YB3i mounted in a space covered by fiberglass deck. It works reliably in that location. I’m sure it would not if the deck were metal. It makes sense that carbon fiber would attenuate the...

Re: I hate my induction plate!

Thanks for the observations. I wonder if all relatively inexpensive induction plates suffer from the same problem? Aluminum is a better conductor of heat than cast iron, I wonder if anyone makes...

Re: How to Shut Off Charging with Balmar MC-614?

If you switch off ignition power to the MC614, it will turn off current to the field wire. Balmar says this is the right way to do it with their regulator.

How do I get NMEA data from my Volvo Penta D2-55A

I use an Actisense EMU-1 on my D255A and monitor coolant temp, oil pressure, and rpm via N2K on my B&G Triton display. You have to tap into the wires going to each gauge, and switched 12V and ground.

Re: Alternator woes

See if you can get a serpentine belt kit for your engine and alternator. Big improvement especially for 100A or greater alternators.

Re: Vesper XB-8000 & Halo Radar Interference

I suspect it is the same issue, the flood of UDP packets on the network. Seems like it could be addressed via firmware changes, but they haven’t responded yet.

Re: Vesper XB-8000 & Halo Radar Interference

I have come to the conclusion that it is not the RF output of the scanner that is causing problems with the XB-8000 in client mode on the boat network, rather it is the flood of UDP data that the...
