Re: Problems With Maui Jim Sunglasses

Had a pair of $250 Maui Jim's years ago. They were OK until I dropped them in the water. Now I stick to $30 glasses and replace as needed with no tears shed.

Re: With lithium do we actually need a dedicated starter battery?

And yet, I have started the Perkins 6.354 on my trawler with one of those dinky $90 lithium battery jumpers from Amazon that's not much bigger than my multi-tester. How do they do that? No BMS?...

Re: With lithium do we actually need a dedicated starter battery?

In reference to the original question, I keep a 100 amp AGM start battery for each engine because:
1. I already had them when I installed the LFP house bank and saw no reason to get rid of them.
2....

Re: How many anchors do you carry?

Tried that. Never again. That is why we came up with the line attached to the chain thing. A short list of things that can go wrong with a trip line to a buoy;

1. Other boats entering the...

Re: How many anchors do you carry?

We carry 2. An oversized Mantus on 100m of chain that lives on the bow and a Fortress FX-37 on 30' of chain and 200' of line that we use as a stern anchor. Keeping in mind that if you "lose" your...

Re: Water jerrycan for gasoline

Jerry jugs are for sissies. Just be sure you double bag before stowing. Safety first!

Re: Forward cockpit flooding

Sounds like your issue is more with catamarans than with forward cockpits. One might argue that with 5 meter seas on the beam you may have been more comfortable bearing off or heaving to. Still, to...

Re: How Many "Blue Water Cruisers" are There

I suspect that this is true to some extent, but I also suspect that it is more complicated than this.
Back in the '80s, when I was living on my boat in the anchorage in Santa Barbara, every year...

Re: Forward cockpit flooding

Again, someone making a bold statement about a design with which they have no experience. Designers have been putting forward cockpits on offshore catamarans for decades. Chris White, Bob Oram,...

Re: Deep vee hulls, center of pressure vs center of lateral resistance?

I expect that any marine oriented CAD program will calculate center of lateral resistance for you. I have used Rhinocerus 3.0 for this. You might want to ask this question on boatdesign.net. There...

Re: Forward cockpit flooding

Wow. Two 1" drains on an Atlantic 55? It's safe to assume that this boat was not built to Chris White's specifications. Any NA worth the title will have specified drainage to ABYC standards at...

Re: Yacht stamp

I have never been asked for a boat stamp, but when offered, it was happily accepted in Asia and Latin America. I found that a flamboyant signature is also appreciated as well. I worked hard on mine...

Re: Forward cockpit flooding

Whenever I see comments like the above I am reminded of a conversation I had with a broker at a boat show. He maintained that he would never sail a catamaran offshore because he had a friend with a...

Re: Forward cockpit flooding

We have a forward cockpit similar to those on a Gunboat. More of a sail handling well than a place to lounge like an Atlantic. In close to 50,000 miles, including a crossing of the North Pacific to...

I use a similar method with my wife hauling me up in a bosun's chair on a 2 part halyard with an angle drill with winch attachment. I also wear a climbing harness attached to the second halyard with...

Re: All modern anchors with loop, based on the Bugel are the same in performance

I don't get it. The original Bruce is a great anchor. A game changer when it came out. I used one for years. But anchor design evolved and a whole lineup of superior anchors became available with...

Re: Headsets for two-way communication?

Yes, although the walkie talkies I linked to are "VOX" or "voice activated". At $19 a pair they might be worth a try for the occasional trip up the mast. If I were using these daily for anchoring I...

Re: Ideal Boat Bike?

The ideal boat bike will be different for everybody as it depends on several factors including:
How much storage space do you have aboard?
How will you get it ashore? Will it fit in your dinghy?...

I would think that leaving from Cabo or Mag Bay would be fairly uncomfortable, as I'm sure you are aware. If you are planning on returning to Mexico at some point a better plan might be to sail from...

Re: Replacing 3/8 BBB chain with Grade 43 high test

You will definitely need a different gypsy. Contact any of the suppliers for more info. They will likely request that you send them a foot of your new chain for an exact fit.

Re: Ideal Boat Bike?

We recently had to replace our ancient 26" mountain bikes. We looked hard at folding bikes but were put off by the lack of load carrying capability and performance. We ended up with Trek Roscoes...

One of my (many) issues with hull insurance is that it seems to rob people of caution. My very unscientific observation has been that the size and scope of ground tackle is inversely proportional to...
