Re: How much Marine antifreeze to winterizing engine?

If you are out of the water, you can just shut the engine water intake valve off, and dump in three gallons of the -100 antifreeze (available at west marine and other places) in through the sea water...

Re: How to convert a Jabsco electric head to fresh water flush

I did this conversion on my boat. Fairly easy. Jabsco makes the needed part. Jabsco 37038-1012, Marine Toilet Repair, Head Solenoid / Anti-Syphon Valve, 12 Volt
You remove your sea water intake hose...

Re: East Coast Florida Summer Storage

We are keeping a leopard 46 from May to early jan at St Augustine Marine Center.
Lots of Cats there and they can handle wide beams no problems. Seems like a good spot with a number of refit services...

Re: Beneteau 48 ocean crossing capability

I have over 20,000 NM on my 2008 beneteau 46, couple of fairly rough Ocean crossings (50 knot winds for a little while). I think the boat handles things very well. The boat is a great platform for...

Re: Marina recommendation for a few months Norfolk

One more vote for Cobb's. I just trucked a boat in there and launched a week ago (good timing with the hurricane..). The service was great, the new docks are very nice and the prices are the best I...

Re: Dripless Seals - Choices

I have this seal on my 2008 Beneteau, 16,000 NM, out of water most winters, works flawlessly, never a drop of water, and simple maint. The boat was built with this seal in the US, so it is not just a...

Re: Spinnaker rigging: what to expect on delivery?

I had the same issue on my Beneteau 46. The halyard was run through a ring above the headstay and up to the masthead block to head inside the mast.
In my case, it did not chafe but the line heated...

Re: Survived Lake Ontario Storm

One more perspective.
I have been sailing on the great lakes for close to 50 years, lots of racing and cruising. 15 plus Crewed Chi-Mac races, 8 Solo Chi to Mac races, 40,000 plus NM, lots of...

Good Spot To Leave A Boat For A Week In St Thomas

I will be sailing to the BVI in the 2016 Salty Dawg rally and want to leave my Benenteau 46 in St Thomas for 8 to 10 days so my wife and I can return to the US for the holidays (Say Dec 21, to 29).

Re: If I run out of fuel, what do I need to do?

I have a Beneteau Oceanis 46 and have two fuel tanks. The engine is a Yanmar 4JH TE. I like to run each tank dry once a year, with the goal of making sure there is no crud or water in the bottom of a...

Re: Getting a dog on and off a boat

We had a similar issue when we had a Ericson 38. It had a solid ladder that swung up to be part of the stern pulpit when not in the down position for swimming/boarding. We could lower that ladder so...

Re: Help me flesh out my ground tackle

One of Fatty's last stories talked about his anchoring in deep water. He has a boat similar to yours and he seemed very pleased with his Rocna, which was a 25, so you are already one size larger than...

Re: What is so great about the Oceanis 473

I have a Beneteau 46, 2008, three cabin model. We like the boat a lot. Have put over 15,000 NM on her so far, with no issues. Driest boat we ever owned, with not a drop of water in the bilge after a...

Re: New boat- need advice on my Dinghy Choice!!

I have had two air floor dingy's, one was a "high pressure" floor west marine model made by zodiac. The air floors are nice for storage and weight. They are not great for planing as the floor will...

Re: Antenna and ground plane on a GRP vessel

I used copper ground planes on a previous boat and it worked OK, but not great. On my current boat I followed the advice from "Dr John". You can get it from this link

Re: Future cruiser buying first sailboat in Michigan

I would consider boats in at least the Lake Mich, Lake Erie and Lake Huron areas. Older boats that have always been in fresh water hold up a little better as there is no salt so less corrosion, and...

Re: Katadyn 40E or 80E

I went with a 40E because it seemed very efficient. The negative for us was since it produced so little water, you had to run it a lot longer. This resulted in our running it while at anchor in...

Re: Fewer used BW cruising boats on the west coast?

I always find the definition of a "true cruising boat" to be an interesting topic, I suppose like anchors, there are strong views that are hard to change. We own a Beneteau 46, have put 15,000 miles...
