Re: Nano technology gelcoat polish

"Silicium"???? What--exactly--is that? Reminds me of "Brondo, its got electrolytes"

I am a chemist and I have no idea what Silicium might be... I am pretty sure there are no particles of...

Re: Propane fittings

If you really think copper has a shorter life span than rubber hose on boat, you are mistaken. As an example, I have a copper manifold on my raw water seachest that is 25 years old. Every hose...

Re: Marking your anchor location

ALL the time. Having an anchor drag alarm doesn't replace any of the other tools of good seamanship around anchoring, it is another tool in the quiver to use.

Since everybody (almost) has a GPS...

Re: RG 223U for Iridium Go?

Definitely true about the "big open sky" requirement. Our Iridium GO system works ALL the time when we are sailing. If we are in a marina, surrounded by other boats with masts and "stuff" it can...

Re: electric through hull

The usual memory aid for us "mature" sailors is to hang the ignition key on the seacock handle when it is closed.

I think you will find that a water flow alarm is a LOT cheaper than a valve with...

Re: Propane fittings

You might like "like and use hose" but that is NOT the correct answer. USCG requirements incorporate ABYC A-01 (https://law.resource.org/pub/us/cfr/ibr/001/abyc.A-01.1993.pdf) by reference. I am...

Re: 2020 Approach to Getting a Captains License?

^^^^ I agree. Annapolis School of Seamanship was a great help not just with the class and test, but also helping me work through some extra complexities of the license process unique to my...

Re: Any advice on a 1981 Cheoy Lee 35?

If memory serves (and the older I get the less it does!) this is one of the Cheoy Lee's with a fiberglass hull, and plywood deck. If it is, check very carefully for rot at the hull deck joint. If...

Re: Fresh water lines

Unless you are taking on water that is suspected of harboring pathogens, bleach will always do more harm than good. If you actually have a biofilm that has attached to the wall of the tank, bleach...

Re: So confused! Batteries/generators

Your questions are very difficult to answer with any authority since I have no idea what kind or size of boat you have.

You do not need a separate "house bank" to run an AC unit.

Almost...

Re: Anyone Contacted Lagoon Aftersales Service?

Groupe Beneteau is not exactly famous for their aftersales support. They seem to have a "you bought it, you own it, thank you very much" approach.

If your dealer is not walking the walk for you,...

Re: ISailor charts now charging annual subscription

The thing I really like about iSailor is the Transas chart data (in most cases!) is completely independently sourced from my other cartography. Always helpful to have a second opinion.

My iPad is...

Re: Gray Water Tank Wiring

I was actually asking about the Whale pumps...

And yes, the old mercury switches did last essentially forever. As long as you didn't break the glass, or sink the float, or corrode the wiring.

Re: Gray Water Tank Wiring

Dockhead,

A separate question from the float switch...

How long have those pumps lasted for you? I have had F----all luck with them. A year at best.

For the switch, I have had good luck...

Re: Cracked Rudder

Gorilla glue is great stuff, but worthless for this problem. It only works for tight fitting applications, it is NOT a "gap filling" adhesive.

Yes, it does "foam up" and fills the space but...

Re: Volvo Penta MD2030 Tacho dropping out

Don't go replacing the tach, it's not the problem.

The fact that the tack AND the charge alarm both go haywire in this way at the same time means that the alternator field current is shutting...

Re: Trailer Sailors - Why no stacking ideas?

The answer here is really, really simple. Stacking sucks.

Moving ballast every tack is almost nobody's idea of a fun sail even if it makes the boat go 0.2 knots faster. I imagine those who think...

Re: Please help

There is no way of getting through the canal "cheap or free". For a 30 foot boat it is US$880. No charity, no negotiating, prayers won't help with that either.

Assuming you can get through at all...

Re: Mast Step Bolts sheared

gstent,

Pretty classic crevice corrosion appearance on the broken bolt ends. Old, dull corroded metal across most of the failure surface, with a narrow rim of shiny surface where the ultimate...

Re: Volvo Penta MD2030 Tacho dropping out

Re: Mast Step Bolts sheared

Yowza! I am not familiar with the Lagoon mast step design. Is that plate the only thing that holds the mast from shifting sideways? or is there also an internal plug (I hope!)?

I'd need to see...

Re: Controlling a Force 10 Stove

Sounds like a broken oven thermostat.

Why not just replace it? While you are at it you can get a new spark box and leave the matches in the drawer.

Parts are readily available for every one...

Re: Seized Transmission - Universal 24hp M-30

Do you know the make/model of the transmission?
