Re: Repair Bent Anchor?

If it's just a back-up anchor or used for kedging, go ahead and bend it back into shape. If it's your primary, get a better anchor. A good anchor is cheap insurance.

Changes to Canadian Registration

For my fellow Canucks - Transport Canada has just informed me that as of April 1st, they no longer automatically renew registrations. Yep, you'll have to go online and fill out the form and give them...

Re: Docking along side

"Pivot point" is more of a conceptual idea, than a fixed point. Of course hull shape can have an effect - in a catamaran, the pivot point is generally between the hulls and can move side to side as...

Re: Docking along side

There are actually three forces here and prop walk is the minor one. You kind of touched on one - asymmetric thrust. With the prop offset from the centreline, it will always present a turning moment...

Re: Docking along side

Do what weebles said.

Quick question - do you have a single rudder or dual?
And can you confirm counter-rotating props?

Re: Furling boom

Not that you seem to be terribly interested in getting opinions from the people who have actual experience with boom furlers, but this is copied directly from the Leisurefurl manual, for what it's...

Re: Collision Avoidance

Fitz was the give-way vessel. We were talking about the actions of the stand-on vessel - y'know Rule 17.

The compounded errors on Fitz's bridge were a lot more complex than you suggest. Had there...

Re: Collision Avoidance

Good eye. It does look like a crappy representation of the lanes. I was going from memory of the discussion. This is one of my concerns with the TSB report, is that it didn't discuss this TSS. It's...

Re: Collision Avoidance

You made such big deal about this, but now you don't want to drift the thread?
How convenient for you - you can just claim my view is wrong or distorted, but offer no "correction."

If the Crystal...

Re: Collision Avoidance

You understand by that point the chance to achieve "common understanding" has long since been lost? At this point, it's about doing the least amount of damage. I'll refer you to the advice you'll...

Re: Collision Avoidance

It clearly says that when taking "action in a crossing situation in accordance with subparagraph (a)(ii) of this Rule." 35 seconds before the crunch, I think that Rule 17(b) applies more so than...

Re: Collision Avoidance

This was in one of the previous threads, from one of the media reports. Voluntary TSS afaik. Crystal was in a crossing with Maersk Evora, and did the unwise turn to port (at 0115 or 0119?)- which...

Actually, I asked that question. Singlespeed stated his friend went port, and hasn't answered my question. But your analysis hits the nail on the head.

Re: Collision Avoidance

You'll note the question mark I put it there - I couldn't remember which was which and couldn't be faffed to look up the various reports. It was obviously the Fitzgerald collision where the opposite...

Re: Collision Avoidance

They do paint on radar, but more like a small vessel. In one of those collisions, the commercial vessel saw the running light on McCain(?) thought it was a fishing vessel and turned to cross its...

Re: IRPCS/COLREGS Source

Alrighty then! Look forward to your input in any upcoming colregs threads ;)
The Canadian rules have a lot of distinct differences from the IRPCS. Many of these differences are mirrored in the US...

Re: Collision Avoidance

Half of those were before AIS was invented. A small percentage of the overall number of collisions between vessels, so military vessels not so special.

Why do you want the 72 Conventions, instead of the applicable national law?

In some jurisdictions it does. I don't know how responsive the USCG is, or if they are the appropriate agency in your particular region - might be state agency or local police, but someone is...

OK, so that's not a fishing vessel according to the rules - it's just a power driven vessel and is required to follow the rules. Call them and inform them they are required to stay out of your way...

Re: Collision Avoidance

Was this a commercial long-liner, or a sport-fishing boat?

There's a wide variance in "commercial vessels", and I wouldn't say that this applies to most.
Ferries are kind of an odd sort, where...

Re: Collision Avoidance

Cheers for humoring the curious forumites.

I'm a little bit confused by your description. Are you sure this wouldn't have been NW of 11A?
By "lighthouse" I assume you mean the Stratford Shoal...
