Re: Climbing the Mast with Webbing Ladder

I also use a web climber. I have used it on many occasions. This past couple of weeks I have used it several times due to a recent lightning hit. I haul mine up with the main halyard, then tie off...

Re: Need to replace my dock lines and fender lines; best material?

I tend to keep a candle on board. I use it mostly for lines and heat shrink. Also it is a good emergency light source and very romantic.

Re: max. amount of Lithium batt. in parallel

Contact the manufacturer of the batteries you are wanting to buy. Hopefully they will know. Lots of information in this thread, some good, some bad, and some scary.
The term BMS has been bandied...

Re: Proper Way to check engine oil level on Yanmar 2YM15

FYI on an old Universal M 25, even after it sits for days and days, when I first pull the dipstick it reads very low. If I wait a second or two with the dipstick out, I then put it back in and get...

Re: Tips for long-term winter sailing

It sounds like you have most everything covered.
I sail out of Oriental NC, and have seen every kind of weather over the years. None of it lasts forever, and you will be heading south where it is...

Re: Anchor bridle aka snubber - advise please

For me, I have found that using line tied to the chain is about the quickest most reliable method. I use a modified rolling hitch called an icicle hitch. Quick to tie, easy to untie. If I want a...

Re: Help ID this Anchor - Any Good?

Fortress (aluminum) is a great all around backup anchor. They are light enough that you can swim them out while using a boat fender or life jacket. Very handy to get yourself un-stuck when you run...

Re: Hurricane Florence

I am about a mile or two up the creek from River Dunes. I too am worried that the storm surge will cause the floating docks to float too high or bust up. I am anchored in soft mud with nothing...

Re: Best Tool To Cut SS Structural Bolts

I would try a sawzall. Use a fine tooth blade and maybe some cutting oil. Not lubricating oil, but cutting or threading oil. Slower speeds work better. You may need to go through multiple blades....

Re: Illustrated Guide to Solar Installations on Boats

Finished most of my solar panel installation on my boat. Panels are two Canadian Solar 230 watts each. Controller is an Outback flex max 80. A bit of an overkill, but I had as part of a much larger...

Re: Age of your boat?

34 years old. All the big stuff is in good shape. All the little stuff will always need fixing/replacing. But it is always sailable.

Re: Flex Shot vs Flex Seal vs Mighty Sealer?

I have had very good luck using the aluminum foil like tape used for air conditioning duct work. Unfortunately it works so well that many "temporary" fixes are still waiting to be fixed years later

Re: Can My Solar Array Run My AC?

After dealing with solar power systems for many years now, I must confirm what several other posters have said. You have got to learn the math to design a system that will work. If you do not want...

Re: Why don't you race - honest?

I just got tired of it. Racing is great fun and very educational, but it is also a lot of work. I guess I don't love it like I used to. Nowadays I would just rather cruise.

Glad you all made it OK. Must have been a tough decision. As far as I know, Southport did get hit, the town docks were damaged and are still closed.

Re: Escaping a Huricane by heading out to ocean

I rode out the edge of the storm up in a sheltered creek near Oriental, NC.
There is no way I would have tried running east or north to avoid the storm. The predictions and changes to the storms...

Lots of great info here.

I am a self proclaimed pack rat, serious hoarder. My advice is to go ahead and bring all of these "so important" items on to your boat. After a short time you will start...

Re: New solar panel and storage technology

What I found to be some what new was the integrated "solid state" battery storage on the mobile panels. Not lead acid or LiPo. They don't go into much detail about their new battery technology, but...

New solar panel and storage technology

Although this is not fully available at this time, it is an interesting approach to home solar utilization. Has great potential for boats with the mobile systems. I hope it becomes a reality. The...
