Re: "Good Enough" vs "The Best"

Far more important than equipment is the judgement, knowledge and skill of the person sailing the boat. At a minimum you want all the equipment functioning and well maintained. The boat itself should...

Re: Additional Costs When Buying a Boat

I would like to throw out a totally different thought about sailing. I have sailed for 30 years, owned 4 big boats and done many charters and have traveled abroad. The MOST stressful sailing is...

Re: Cuba charts and cruising guides

It appears a post of mine was deleted. I believe in both individual liberty and free speech. I will not be a party to this.

Re: Great Lakes Advice (risky venture for newbie?)

Yes. I would hesitate to go thru Chicago. The UP is very scenic and forgiving. That would be my choice. I drive it often.

Re: Great Lakes Advice (risky venture for newbie?)

One last aside from me. It would be a very, very, very tiring trip without an auto pilot.

Re: Great Lakes Advice (risky venture for newbie?)

A big issue is taking a new untested and unfamiliar boat with the first trip being the biggest you will probably ever do. You will need gps, radio, charts and fuel for 60 miles. Buy something closer...

Re: Great Lakes Advice (risky venture for newbie?)

The weather issues tend to be thunderstorms/cold front and the good news is the pass quickly. 20-40 minutes just get all sail down until it passes. I have crossed the lake twice alone in a 32 footer....

Re: Great Lakes Advice (risky venture for newbie?)

You will need a good 10-12 hours of weather to cross the lake. The same to go to Charlevoix. Then Mackinaw City. I have crossed the lake several times. You can’t have an easy wind but about...

Re: Great Lakes Advice (risky venture for newbie?)

The secret to making it a safe trip is unlimited time. You could probably have the boat trucked for a reasonable cost or hire a delivery crew. That said I would take the boat north along the western...

Re: Buying and selling a sailboat

Transferring a boat title is like selling a car. Before the Catalina 36 I put offer on a Catalina 380. Liked the owner who was getting out of sailing at age 75 due to knee replacements. Gave him...

Buying and selling a sailboat

Two years ago I bought a 2001 Catalina 36. I am the third owner, she is a Great Lakes boat stored in doors in winter. The 36 is a great boat. Well built and designed. Safe, stable and comfortable....

Re: Cone poll

Sorry that was supposed to be a web search question not a post. Col regs apply outside the international water way demarcation and inland rules inside of that demarcation.

Re: Cone poll

I believe the Inland water rules apply to most harbors, Great Lakes and most waterways we all navigate. Under those rules a sailboat under power is a power boat. Giving a long blast when leaving a...

Re: Cone poll

Question. Does anyone routinely give a long blast in the air horn when leaving a slip or a long blast and three short ones indicating leaving with engines reversed?

Re: Your 1st time sailing the Caribbean - When and where did you go?

Tortola-BVI’ s. I have been many times from November to May. Very sheltered, many mooring fields. Most popular charter destination in the world and the price is affordable. I fly to St Thomas, cab to...

Sorry if I offended you. My reply was meant to be informative. Over the past 20 years I have chartered about 18 times including that charter area. I have never been anywhere where the quality has not...

Re: Bringing own provisions to USVI

If you can afford the charter in the USBVI’s which is way more than in the BVI’ you can afford the food. Believe it or not, the standard of living in the world is comparable to the US. You need to...

Re: Why don't charter boats sail?

I have chartered many times, cats a few times and a large cat once. Getting the main up was painful and I would only do it once a day. I am usually the only sailor on board. In the BVI’s the...

Re: Climate Change - what to expect for cruising life

We can expect autocratic governments to make cruising forbidden. Recreational watercraft a thing of the past and groupthink universal so don’t worry about it. It will be perfect.

Thank you for not listing it. There are people it is better not to deal with. I thought the “drunken drama “ comment really uncalled for.
