Re: Soft shackle that does not accidentally open

I have a trouble opening the shackle so I put a loop of vb cord through the eye. I make my own using a button knot and I make the eye around one thickness of the cord I’m using, first step in the...

Re: Have I cooked my alternator?

Had better check your charge light. If the lamp is blown the alternator doesn’t get any power to initiate the charge.
The charge light should illuminate when the engine is switched on but not...

Re: Lifting my engine out with the boom

I have done exactly what you are doing. Just moving the engine. I have a Yanmar 4jh5e that weighs 230kg. On lifting I too had a lot of halyard stretch. When lifting back into place I put a prop of...

Re: Tweed Heads, Australia bar

Has been an interesting thread, many good thoughts and practices expressed. I personally don’t have sails up for bar crossings because I feel it adds complexity should things begin to go wrong....

Re: Tweed Heads, Australia bar

That’s the problem with the NSW river ports like Port Macquarie, Yamba, etc, you really can’t turn back once you get a good look at it. If tide is running out the last thing you want to be is...

Re: Tender for 42 ft cruiser

Been to Whitsundays and a bit further a few times. Most yachts have inflatable dinghies. Though there are crocs on the main land down to The Great Sandy Strait (not seen any myself) there isn't many...

Re: Tender for 42 ft cruiser

A very popular tender here on Lake Macquarie is the Highfield 290. It comes in ultralight 46kg or classic 59kg. PVC or hypalon. We have a Tohatsu 9.8hp 2 stroke and a 5hp. The 5 is light 18kg but...

Re: VHF antenna on mast

That’s very innovative. Well done.
The OP didn’t state usage and being a trailer yacht your system would be perfect.

Re: Do you leave your windlass on?

We have a Beneteau OC 45, the windlass only operates when the engine is on, not necessarily running. You got me thinking as all the issues you talk of are very real given the environment the controls...

Re: Accumulator placement in freshwater system

Shurflo pumps don’t need an accumulator as they have a bypass system. We changed out our Jabsco as the wife didn’t like how noisy it was when I was showering and she was watching all important TV....

Re: run a 1200w water heater with 900w Generat

If you have shore power available why would you want to run your portable generator?
Next scenario, you are away from shore power and want to heat the water from cold. You need a generator of...

Re: Reason to keep second alternator?

I believe it's a good idea to have a spare alternator and starter motor. I have these but I don't keep them on board unless I'm going long distance cruising as bearings will Brinell (Google that)....

Re: wires burned up with 4 100 watt panels

This is the elephant in the room. You are all diving in at the deep end.
Markcouz is so correct about “cheap nasty junk” and as another said why have fuses at the solar panel end? I’m a retired...

Re: Balmar Alternator Temperate Protection Settings

I have made 2 posts to this thread. My first talks about the success I had just cable trying to an engine mount, an inline Rule blower just pointing at the alternator with no ducting. It blows the...

Re: cleaning barnacle "glue" on knot meter paddles

I’ve been using bleach for years but I like the sound of vinegar. Canner’s vinegar sounds like what is called “double vinegar” here, also good for getting green mould off sails, biminis and dodgers....

Re: What is this heavy copper cable?

I was meaning the balls they put over buildings may attract lightning.
However you have confirmed what the guys told me as said before “lightning let’s us know how puny we are”. Why only 270,000mph?...

After removing the cover...

Re: Why Do I Have Two Jib Fairleads Per Side?

Obvious if there are two tracks on each side thus you need a car on each track. However, handy for quite a few reasons as mentioned by others.
If the cars are pin stop blocks then the second car...

Re: Jackline keeps spinning round and round

I feel sure you must be using twisted line. I had this problem at our yacht club when I was the flag officer. Someone previously had used twisted line for the halyards on the flag poles. I found they...
