My boat has been on land for two years. I came to test it out prior to putting it in the water. To my surprise, the Volvo Penta 2003 diesel engine started easily. However, the fuel gauge didn't...

Re: My refrigerator still uses R-12. What are my options?

It seems refrigeration is some kind of poorly understood magical phenomenon. Just in the last two messages, one response is that icing of the evaporator means low refrigerant whereas the next...

Re: My refrigerator still uses R-12. What are my options?

I'm not at the boat now, but I don't think there's much airflow behind the condensor. It's up against the wooden wall as you say. On the other side of that wall, is the U-shaped couch with dining...

Hi Nello,

Thanks for your response. It's good to know you have the same fridge. What brand/model remote thermometer do you recommend? Is it battery powered or do you have to run electricity into...

Re: My refrigerator still uses R-12. What are my options?

Thanks for all the replies. One crucial question I got from you all is whether the problem is really the lack of refrigerant or something else. How do I tell? I would say significant frost forms on...

My refrigerator still uses R-12. What are my options?

I have a Frigoboat AV-12 refrigeration system in my sailboat. I think it is the original refrigeration from the 1980s. I have owned the boat for fifteen years and have not done anything to maintain...

Re: stripped thread on prop shaft

Thanks for all the replies. I'm afraid I don't know the answers to most of the questions you have asked though. Yes, I meant bronze not brass on the nut in the picture. And I'm told by the marina...

stripped thread on prop shaft

When the marina removed the prop to change the cutlass bearing, they found the threads ruined on both the shaft and the hub. They say that the prop is not the original prop for the boat, that it was...

Re: Batteries lasting only 2 years - AGM any better?

Many of you suggested that the problem wasn’t the batteries. I think you were right. I thought I’d provide an update.

Using my fancy new battery tester, I measured around 600 CCA per battery,...

Re: Batteries lasting only 2 years - AGM any better?

By the way, there does not seem to be any loads draining the battery when everything is off. I have a battery monitor that I put in front of everything, and it records a daily history of loads.

Re: Batteries lasting only 2 years - AGM any better?

Thanks to all for the suggestions. It sounds like many of you think the problem may not be the battery. So I just ordered an Ansel Ba101 digital battery tester on amazon so I can test the CCAs...

Re: Batteries lasting only 2 years - AGM any better?

Wow, 8-10 years, that's great. My batteries are interstate brand, I get them from the local marine shop. The boat gets hauled out for the winter in Connecticut. I didn't know about the permacube,...
