Re: Passing Time on Watch

Curious... I not once I found myself in a situation when I had nothing to do at sea. When on watch in the cockpit, I am normally behind the wheel, so I am "busy". If on autopilot, with good weather,...

Re: Inexpensive AIS Receiver

AIS trasncievers are expensive, to buy and configure. When I outfitted Nausikaa I had a choice. Fit a radar or fit an AIS transciever. Couldn´t afford both. I chose the radar. Best choice I ever...

Re: Avoiding fog off the Portuguese coast in July

As said by others, most natural harbours on the Portuguese Atlantic are tidal river mouths. Porto case in point. In many of those if not most, there's is a sandbar at the mouth, so big swell can...

Re: Avoiding fog off the Portuguese coast in July

The whole of the Galician coast is a delight to cruise, particularly the Rias Bajas. I did it two yrs ago on the way to the Med. Also stoped in Gijón. I would give Viveiro a miss and stop instead in...

Re: Fouling of solar panels

How about some very light gauge transparent nylon netting mounted on a frame on top to fit the panels? Light interference will me minimal, if any. They have to be easy to remove to clean the panels,...

Re: North Up or Heading Up?

Concurr! Only exception is navigating in narrow channels or between shallows and sandbanks where I prefer heading up. It's just a matter of scale and the actual size of your chart plotter screen.

Re: Solo Ocean Crossing: 40 ft or 26 ft?

Your question implies that LOA is the deciding factor for solo ocean crossing. It ain't! Both could be yes and no, depending on the sailor. Pls reformulate question if you are looking for pertinent...

Re: Need alternative to Pirate flag

Equally cranky here. I don't have an ideological position on the topic, but it is worth pointing out that many, if not most, of those pirates were licenced for piracy by legitimate governments of the...

Re: More incidents with orcas

Many folk stories like this one, about orcas and other marine (or terrestrial!) animals. Unlikely to be accurate though. Orcas would not "ram" a boat head-on, unless by accident. In common with all...
