Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

I’d sure go get a look at that one!
There’s one near me I’ve seen out at the islands. Beautiful boat.

Re: San Francisco to Portland, Oregon (area) APRIL 22 Depart 4/22

It's not just wind, check swell predictions as well. Most of those duck-in spots close when things pick up. Swells will likely be steeper closer to shore in a more coastal route.

Re: Frozeen turnbuckle

Yeah as Gord shows, ATF and acetone is a good choice. Worked for me! Once they are unfrozen I’ve found Aerokroil works to keep them that way.

Re: Bronze vs SS Bolts for Chainplates

I didn’t know bronze suffers from crevice corrosion. Is that possible?
What struck me was the mix of metals in the rigging! What boat is this? Is it all original?
My experience is with bronze...

Re: Furler to Hanks? Makes sense or no?

Sure, when they work as intended , and they usually do, they are great, but I’d much rather change a hanked on sail than deal with a jammed furler. My sail change is from Genoa to working jib, so...

Re: Furler to Hanks? Makes sense or no?

I have hank-ons and I too sail here in SoCal. There are benefits to both, but if you have the cash I’d consider the furling upgrade and talk to a sailmaker about a headsail upgrade as well. You can...

Re: Running a two stroke from a large static tank? How to deal with mix?

Probably a good idea to add something like Sta-Bil to treat the gas since it will likely be sitting for long periods of time. I have only have 2 6-gallon tanks and it takes me forever to burn through...

Re: Change a Dripless Shaft Seal while in the Water?

Carsten, I am guessing that a big dollop of toilet ring wax would also have worked in this situation?

Re: jib leech getting trashed by staysail stay

Often leech lines are too long, but there is often a pocket in the leech to keep the extra line out of the way. You can cut the line shorter only if you are sure the leech is fully stretched out and...

Re: Oil slick in a storm to calm swell

It is indeed a remedy recommended in old books for preventing waves upwind of you from breaking. I haven't tried it though. This topic has come up in past threads too, you might do a search for it....

Re: Running a two stroke from a large static tank? How to deal with mix?

You may have the answer you need, but if it were me I'd mix the oil I knew I was going to need with some gas in a jug for gas first, pour that in, and then add the rest of the gas needed, just to be...

Is it red as in the color of rust? Got any photos? I guess you are wondering if you need to drop the keel to check all the keel bolts?

Re: Newcomer question - how to begin?

I'd get some experience chartering catamarans you are thinking of first to see if it all really appeals to you and your wife. Make sure you and your wife are in complete agreement there.

Re: Docking long keel/heavy displacement yachts.

I can only speak from experience with a Downeast 38, which has a bow sprit which makes it even more interesting. As has been said, with practice you'll get the hang of it. In my case very little of...
