Roll and tip with awl grip is a great way to go as long as you keep it a light color. My boat is done in dark green awl grip. My guy put 4 coats roll and tipped before he gave up and had to spray....

I had the same problem. I just cut off 2" of the mast and bolted a 2" riser plate to where the mast steped. End problem...
