Re: Effective way to keep birds away?

We have been afflicted in the past. My neighbors' nice old wooden Hinckley was a target, too. Most of the birds like the spreaders. Have you tried duct tape on the topside of the spreaders with...

Re: Buoyancy flotation bags to keep boat from sinking

I've visualized bags attached near the cabin sole, stored in purpose built storage (you'll need smaller water tanks), and not rising closer than 2 feet from the overhead so that you might access a...

Re: Disposing of unwanted old diesel fuel

I put my old diesel fuel in my storage tank for my home furnace. Used to use one 5 gal. poly jug with several trips, I'm not sure I can get a full jug up the companionway ladder now.

Re: My catamaran defies the laws of physics

With little tide and moderate wind I've had good luck deploying a light anchor perpendicular to the main anchor/mooring rode. There needs to be a little tension on the rode to the small anchor. The...

Re: How bad does this engine look?

If the boat sank, it is likely salt water got into the engine by way of the air intake. If so, it is very unlikely it will turn over. So one of the first tests you should make is can you turn the...

Re: "Worth it" to top off diesel for the winter?

I was told by a professional diesel technician that it is best to have room in the tank for fresh fuel at the beginning of the season. He said that old fuel was bad for diesel engines; gum builds...

Re: Inner engine corrosion protection.

It is possible that "stray currents" are causing abnormal corrosion of raw water cooled engines. Consult an expert.

Re: Perkins 4.108 erratic rpm's

The only rpm abnormal behavior we had with our 4-108 was slowing down due to filter clogging. We didn't have a polisher then, but each spring I would pump out the sludge from the tank. After...

Re: How terrible is it to run a mast cable not in a conduit?

On the Cape Dory 36, 'Diapensia,' we had we soon tired of the rattle in the mast. The next haulout I found that the extrusion had a track (I think it was on the forward side of the mast) for which...

Re: Yacht on the hard - what to do with batteries?

We have one each group 24 and group 27 lead acid batteries. These go home where I can monitor their voltage/charge. Charging is convenient. Getting 'em up and down the ladder is not.

Re: "Sailing" on the hook

I usually deploy a kellet on a messenger along the anchor line. This serves both the purpose of lowering the anchor line's pull on the anchor and damping the lateral sailing. My kellet consists of...

Re: Wing nut stuck on battery terminal

Disconnect that battery! I once, when much younger, did some welding next to a tractor battery being charged. The battery blew up; the whole top came off. 'Lucky I had a welding mask on.
