Re: Fiberglass repair on hatch cover

It's not that gelcoat does not stick; the problem is that the gelcoat doesn't cure. Not sure why, maybe the amine precipitate?

I've tried this many times and sometimes gelcoat will cure, most...

Re: Generator problem

Check if the fuel pickup tube in the tank has a screen and if that screen is clogged.

Re: Insulating a 44ft - How much Armaflex will I need?

I used 1.5 rolls. Each roll is 4' x 25' long. Insulated from gunwale to the waterline. It's a 36' boat, beam 11.5'

I did not insulate the fwd chain locker or the port quarter. All I measured was...

Re: Designing new panels for our boat

Ed,

The panic switch turns on the four exterior lights systems simultaneously from a single switch in the V berth. It's used anytime I want these four exterior lights on at once (theft threat,...

Re: First test results Winston vs LiTime

As one who does not have the money to buy $500 batteries just to test, I am grateful to folks like Jedi who do this to help us make more informed decisions. It would be very convenient if this...

Re: Designing new panels for our boat

It's a toggle for the strobe on the masthead. When I placed the "strobe" label on the design diagram in Front Panel Express, I forgot to account for the size of the lockout cover. :nonono:

Re: Designing new panels for our boat

Ryban,

Take you time designing your panel and whatever wires you're going to pull because you will likely encounter the "Oh, Sh!t" moment when you realized that you should have done this or done...

Re: Hard Dodger Window Material

Thank you for the link to tempered glass. I haven't ruled out glass completely, but have excluded prefab windows because of cost. From what I understand, the two plastic choices are still stronger...

Re: Hard Dodger Window Material

Bowdrie

I reviewed that document and has nice illustration of the joint; however, because of the need for primer and UV degradation that Thinwater alluded to in post #8, I'll stick with silicone...

Re: Hard Dodger Window Material

Good morning

Based on the advice over the last few days, I changed the design of the layup schedule and the windows.

I redesigned the window openings for acrylic windows, largely based on...

Re: Hard Dodger Window Material

Hey ya'll,

Thanks for the input on window material and structure. I received the quotes from the window makers and have inputted the data into a spreadsheet to compare the costs of pre-fab windows...

Hard Dodger Window Material

I am building a hard dodger and am at the point of deciding on window material.

My two choices are between one of the two plastics (acrylic/polycarbonate) that I install and manufactured framed...

Re: Griptex non skid, but in Gelcoat - Not Paint

Scubaseas,
Have you used Evertex medium grit? If so, is it effective and did you use paint or gelcoat to adhere the grit to the deck?

Thanks

Re: Cabin sole: Teak/Holly or Teak only

Thanks Jedi, an interesting idea for the companionway steps that is less ugly than the sandpaper strips found on skateboard decks. I'll test this out on some scrap.

Re: Cabin sole: Teak/Holly or Teak only

I thought about Cypress, but it's a bit on the soft side. These strips will stand a bit proud of the teak, so I want wood that is on the hard side.

Re: Cabin sole: Teak/Holly or Teak only

Bad Orca,

It's varnish, Interlux Schooner #96

First, Seafin Teak Oil (2 coats to soak in), then one more coat oil was wet-sanded in with 320 grit paper and buffed smooth. After about an hour,...

Re: Cabin sole: Teak/Holly or Teak only

Hey y'all,

Thanks for the feedback and I think I'll take a step back and re-assess the sole. I am inclined to follow the path of unfinished (or oiled) teak separated with narrow strips of another...

Re: Calculating Dyneema for Standing Rigging

Thanks for the information over the last couple of days.

Re: Calculating Dyneema for Standing Rigging

Hmm. Based on that D/d ratio, I could get away with a 1/2" or 5/8"pin, if I can get the tangs and turnbuckle sides rounded and smooth enough for chafe to not be an issue (chafe protection of...

Re: Calculating Dyneema for Standing Rigging

Compelling reason: my ignorance of point loading.

I've thought about thimbles, but am at an impasse because of the question about point loading. My pins are 1/2" for all shrouds (5/8" for...

How is that Reef-Rite working out? Have you sailed with it and how well did it do. I finally got the mast stepped and now can get an exact measurement for an order.

Does the...

Re: Calculating Dyneema for Standing Rigging

Has anyone used Colligo's "Standing Rigging Terminals" instead of CheekyTangs?

In my case, I'd use them at both ends of the shrouds with turnbuckles (no deadeyes).
