Re: I Can't Believe I'm Starting a Gun Thread

12ga 3" Brenneke slugs.

And to relate this to cruising and provisioning.... buy the weapon (Mossberg 500 20"), own it, make sure everyone aboard has gone to the range to shoot it and knows how to...

Re: If I charter my boat, and a renter sinks it, what happens?

Chartering your boat is a good way to make hundreds of dollars, at a cost of thousands while incurring millions in liability. :)

Re: V berth mattress - what did you pay? From where?

I went to a local canvas maker. Had them laminate 3 different pieces of foam together. Three difference densities and thicknesses. Dense and thick to lighter, thinner . Made a wonderful mattress....

Re: Forced to give up sailing

I had to give up sailing when I was taken off my boat by the FLFD paramedics and brought to the ER. Unable to stand, drink, barely able to talk. Right side of my body and left side of my face was...

Re: World population is growing 20 million people every 3 months

The actual UN data:

https://esa.un.org/Unpd/wpp/Publications/Files/Key_Findings_WPP_2015.pdf

The key findings are that the world population will reach 9.7 billion by 2050.

At that...

Re: Comfort/stability of 33, 37 and 40' production boats in blue water?

Hasten to add two small caveats:

Fatigue - given a solo sailor

Go small go now - given that you are experienced enough

Re: Comfort/stability of 33, 37 and 40' production boats in blue water?

The factors that contribute to stability and comfort are manifold. It is really not as simple as LOA.

First and foremost is displacement (regardless of length). That is why a Westsail 32 is a...

Re: Marine SSB Restrictions

Does the Maritime Mobile Service Net still send reports to ShipTrak?

If so, the very best option would be for the Father in law to get ham licensed ASAP. That would allow direct comms between...

Re: Opinion on a few mid 30' boats

Both are nice boats. The Morg 383 is of greater displacement and that will translate to more space down below. Not sure about the ballast/displacement ration, but the 383 is very well behaved and...

Army

A64 is giving you really good advice. You can plan all you want to, but having a check coming in every month and a champagne lifestyle beats racking your brain to try and figure out how...

Re: Am I spoiled or truly burned out?

ps - sure, 7 years seems like a lot, if you have it in your head that you are putting off your life. You need to stop thinking that and start living the life you want.

Figure out what your...

I appreciate the response regarding propagation and apologize for any hijack (though I think it is relevant).

Re: Optimal SSB Antenna(e)

I would not worry about the exact length of the backstay, as an antenna. Use as much of it as can possibly can.

My only concern would be propagation...these days. And this is a good question for...

Re: Optimal SSB Antenna(e)

Not sure your PSC is going to get caught between a stellar body and a singularity anytime soon (even on a circumnavigation). However, be sure your shrouds, forestay and backstay are strong enough to...

Re: Need a Precise Explanation

Your Bristol 30 is a beautiful Halsey Herreshoff design. It has a Keel/centerboard design (K/CB). This was done quite a bit in Bristol's later, refined by Ted Hood and his incomparable Hood 38 (built...

Re: LOST CENTERBOARD

I assume you are referring to the older, John Alden designed B35 and not the Bristol 35.5. The earlier boat was available as a Keel/centerboard, or full keel.
Either way (and either boat), you can...

The T37 is a well respected, quality boat. There is a very good write up on them in Practical Sailor's, Practical Boat Buying. That might answer your questions.

I have no experience with them,...

Re: Large or Small?

I think these survey's are deceptive. There may be an increase...

Re: Source of oily bilge?

Oil in the bilge could be from transmission fluid or diesel fuel. Both are red in color and easily confused.

To check transmission leaks...just put a white oil adsorbent cloth under the tranny....
