Re: Tensions in South China Sea

My guess would be that the Chinese figure most of the world is distracted by what is going on in the Middle East right now, so they can safely push things to the next level. They may be right.

And still not enough detail to get any useful answers.

What exactly are you wondering about? What is it that you don't understand about sailing south from Hudson to Sarasota?

Re: Hudson to Sarasota `

My suggestion would be, go south.

Seriously, though, a little more detail about what sort of information you are looking for would be helpful. It's a pretty easy trip, with lots of places to...

Re: Customs check in denied entry to St Lucia

I would emphasize this point. No matter what your reason might be for wanting to be in Grenada, your schedule is out the window. Your first priority needs to be sorting out your registration mess.

Re: Dumb question - raising sails on a trailered boat

I have raised the sails while the boat sat on a trailer several times. Do it on a day with little to no wind. As much as possible, point it into the wind. Leave the sheets loose. Be prepared to douse...

Re: LOA Measurement Question

No, that is not a legally binding, official standard. It is the definition used by one agency. Various marinas, manufacturers, and individuals use different definitions. There is NOT one, standard...

Re: LOA Measurement Question

You are correct. There is no official, standard definition of the term. Some people/marinas/manufacturers include bow and stern appendages, which (to me) seems like the logical thing for length...

Re: Time for new engine?

6,000 hours, for a diesel engine that has been well-maintained, is not all that much. I would get a qualified mechanic to perform an engine survey on it, and make your decisions based on that. It may...

Oops! Just noticed that I said Western Caribbean. I meant Eastern Caribbean, but it's too late to edit the post.

(Of course, drugs are a problem in the Western Caribbean, too. Just not...

Re: How to stop clothes from smelling sour?

Remember also that any residual soap in the cloth will be a mold magnet. You have to be sure to rinse very thoroughly.

This, actually, applies as much on land as it does on a boat.

Re: Not what I expected to see in Eleuthera !

No, it is a sign of things that have been. Drugs have been a problem throughout the Western Caribbean for a very long time. And nowadays, drugs and guns pretty much go together.

The good news is...

Re: Retirement - Managing your money

They are very slightly higher than ours right now, but ours was WAAAAY higher during the last couple of years. Ours peaked at nearly 8% and has (thankfully) come down recently.

Re: Retirement - Managing your money

Same thing. Printing money. And in the countries where they didn't print so much money -- Germany, Britain, France -- their inflation has been significantly lower than ours.

Re: Retirement - Managing your money

Yeah, but that's right now. If you had bought a million worth of bitcoin in Nov. of 2021 you would have less than 15.5 of them. Or, if you had bought a million worth in Nov. of 2022 you would have...

Re: Best state to register a new-to-us boat

It's really not that complicated, but you do have to do research on every state that you end up spending time in. If you move it out of Florida within 90 days then you do not have to pay sales tax to...

Re: Capturing West Advisor Pages

You're missing the fact that there are people in this world -- and a fair number of them -- who make their living through their copyrights. Is it okay with you to steal the money from their pockets?...

Re: Capturing West Advisor Pages

No offense, but you need to read up some more on fair use. For just one example, whether or not you charge for it has almost nothing to do with fair use. Here's a pretty good reference......

Re: SS Sailing/Rigging Knife A. G. Russel

I have an AG Russel knife (not the one shown). Outstanding quality and design. If I didn't already have a marlinspike knife that I am perfectly happy with I would definitely consider this one.

Re: trailer launching full keel boat?

Like Jammer said, it depends on the ramp. Around here, at least, many do not go out far enough and deep enough to launch a full keel sailboat. Try to use one of those and -- like Fore and Aft...
