Re: Last Ultra Marine West Giveaway of the Year!

I'd like to win one of these:

We like to anchor and I believe that this addition to my bow would enhance that experience.

Thanks...

Re: ICW: What does it really mean to "skip Georgia"

A number have discussed Georgia so I won't bother except to say we are a trawler which came thru GA in May of this yr and had no issues.

I noticed you also mentioned Bob423 tracks. You should...

Re: Lithium Battery Combinations

My only comment would be that whatever you plan for now will probably NOT be what you have a year or 2 down the river, so plan for twice as much as you need today.

Re: Can Navionics display dist & brg to waypoint?

I would agree that the app is not as complete as the Navionics loaded on a Garmin chartplotter. Understandable.

You can't blame Garmin for buying the parts that they can and incorporating them...

Re: Can Navionics display dist & brg to waypoint?

I have found quite frequently that some will post issues that they have had with Navionics, Garmin or any other manufacturer.

Navionics has run on a number of different platforms, which isn't...

Re: Can Navionics display dist & brg to waypoint?

I don't use Navionics on a tablet to navigate, I have an 8616xsv as an MFD and on that it is very simple.

If for example I want to know the distance to a bridge and time of arrival along my route,...

Re: ARE WE MAD? Embarking on a sailing adventure with zero experience

As I have said previously and I'd like to know how many of those applauding your endeavor are 1st responders, that if it were only you and your family that are being put in danger, that would be...

Re: handheld depth sounder

Partly, it depends on future use.

I got one, similar to this (https://hawkeyeelectronics.com/products/depthtrax-1h-handheld-depth-finder) that I use on the dinghy. I find it accurate, to the...

Re: ARE WE MAD? Embarking on a sailing adventure with zero experience

Yes, you are mad and yes, it is exciting BUT, it isn't you that I have any concern for.

The life you have now selected is fraught with many pitfalls and those can be very life threating.

Re: Biggest Solar Panels...

I don't know if you picked up that the 550W is with 2 panels, therefore each panel is 275W which is not a big panel.

I'd make sure that whatever you focus on will actually fit in the location...

Re: Metal Mooring Attachment-no pick up

The comments I see are to attach a shackle or carabinier to the metal ring, but it was stated that it didn't come out of the water.

That makes it pretty hard to attach either and also to remove it...

Re: Prop shaft zinc

Don't know why you picked there for aq plin regular anode, but I'd move that one on the other side of the strut. Why you might ask, well JUST IN CASE the shaft should decide to separate from your...

Re: Pin and sleeve connectors for 30a shore power

Compared to the 'standard' Marinco boat side receptacle and their cords the SmartPlug is the safest and to date I haven't seen anything else that comes close to the SmartPlug. I'm open if someone has...

Re: Pin and sleeve connectors for 30a shore power

Just for clarity's sake the safest shore side connectors are the SmartPlug.

Please see here (https://smartplug.com/) for specifics.

The 'special plug' is for the boat side.

The regular twist...

Re: Super capacitors for starting, bowthruster, and windlass circuits

It's been my experience that anything 'cheap' on a boat is usually a foreshadowing or portending of serious issues down the river.

Initially, after buying our boat I was always in search of the...

Re: Insurance needed for transient (temporary) dockage?

Best as we can remember, in our current 7yr Great Loop, we have never been asked for insurance info while staying in a marina as a transient.

Re: Below Decks Autopilot selection - Input Requested

First, I think you should consider the future of the company you ultimately choose. Full disclosure we are a trawler and we are a Garmin boat.

We have a full Garmin suite of chartplotter, radar,...

Re: Lobster pots and ways to avoid them

They say that anything you bring on board a boat should serve 2 purposes.

We use these (https://seashieldmarine.com/product/salca-sacrificial-anode-line-cutter-assembly-patent-pending-zinc/) which...

Re: What does your Class B AIS transponder do for you?

Part of the equation is your aversion to collisions.

We are not blue water cruisers and the cruising we do is inshore rivers, lakes and canals we often encounter tows pushing numerous barges.

Re: How to store dinghy and outboard for offshore

Don't know your boat or your setup, BUT we have a 310 Mercury RIB with 6HP 4 stroke engine on davits attached to our swim platform.

The davits are Atkins & Hoyle out of Canada which hold the...

Re: good source for ss backing plates?

As to the last mention of using dissimilar metals, AL & SS, I think it is smarter to keep away from that.

Coating will wear or wick away and you have the potential of electrolysis.

Going with...

Re: good source for ss backing plates?

I was getting my windlass mounted on a...

Re: Proposed regulation limit boat speed to 10 knots on East Coast

Geez, I thought you might be looking for some facts, but obviously to some that isn't the case.

My trawler usually cruises at 8mph, well under the proposed speed limit.

The statement made...

Re: Proposed regulation limit boat speed to 10 knots on East Coast

I think if you re-read the NOAA post you will see that the rule is being changed from 65' to 35' to get the smaller boats to slow down.

This is primarily to assist the Right Whale for which there...

Re: Do you mark your anchor line

What we've had the best luck with is spray paint. We're on about 7yrs with our marking.

Not the regular home type but a road version. A place like McMaster-Carr would be a good place to purchase...
