Re: Favorite cruising related sayings

A boat can have all the problems an RV can have, with the added attraction that a boat can also sink.

Re: Beta or Westerbeke for repower?

The M12 is a marinized Kubota Z400, which I understand was widely used as a small industrial engine. I haven't found the Kubota serial number. I've looked, even engaged in upside down boat yoga in...

Re: Beta or Westerbeke for repower?

Based on my limited experience keeping an old Universal M12 running I wouldn't have anything to do with Westerbeke.

The most recent example is I needed a pair of glow plugs. Westerbeke had them...

Re: GPS via USB to Samsung A8 tablet

I've had good luck with a USGlobalSat BU-353-S4 but they appear to be out of production. A quick Google search turned up a USGlobalSat BU-353-N for all of $33.95. I have no experience with the...

Re: Titanic tourist submersible goes missing

Interesting point.

Do you know if Magellan's vessel was tested and certified to any better standard than the Titan? It's pure speculation on my part but it's possible the USCG wasn't enthusiastic...

Re: Wanted Catalina 25 with Trailer and Swing Keel

I've got a C25, a tall rig with fixed keel and inboard diesel and I like it but I also agree with Stephen and Joe, C22's definitely have their merits, particularly as trailer sailors.

That said,...

Re: The 2021 & 2022 Joke Threads

Actually Foster's was quite popular in backpacking circles at one point . . . for the can, not the beer.

Re: Halyard eye splice question.

My practice on my little boat is to end-for-end the main and jib halyard at least every other year, which means cutting off the halyard hitch before I can do that. I've found whipping the line just...

Re: Are ignition keys pointless in the cockpit?

Actually that's one of the upgrades I'm considering. If and when I get around to that little project I also intend to get one of Blue Seas Weatherdeck switch panels so I can control the bow & stern,...

Re: Universal 25XP not starting...bleeding?

I was struggling to follow your logic because in my opinion the device in the fuel pump is a fine screen, not a filter. Then I got back into the document on Catalina Direct and found it titled as...

Re: Universal 25XP not starting...bleeding?

I was about to make the same comment. I've got a M-12, very different engine but my understanding is Catalina used the same electric pump on a lot of installations.

Getting to the point I was...

Re: Changing fuel filter on Universal 5411(M15)

According to the manual, yes you will have to bleed the system by opening the bleed plug on the fuel filter "housing."

Again, according the manual you'll have to use the decompression lever and...

Re: Engine oil for Universal M18?

Timely question for me, Rockinar.

I've got a Universal M-12 and plan on buying Rotella T4 15-40W the next time I see gallons on sale. Correct me if I'm wrong but that shouldn't that exceed the...

Re: Environmental Issue in Tampa Bay

Technically the ammonia will be part of the total nitrogen in the waste water.

That minor point aside my understanding is Tampa Bay is already heavily loaded with nutrients and this ain't gonna...

Re: Why are so many derelict boats sailboats?

I'd say the number of neglected power and sailboats is about equal at the marina I'm using.

For better or worse the owner is pretty diligent about removing derelict boats. It's kinda sad to see...

Re: My first sailboat.

Funny, you sound like me about 4 years ago.

My path was taking ASA 101 and crewing aboard race boats in the lower Chesapeake for three seasons before buying a C25 about a year and a half ago.

Guess I'll introduce myself.

60 years old (physically, anyway) male, single currently living in Norfolk VA looking for a first mate.

It looks like I've got 2, maybe 3 years until retirement and...

Re: Old boat liability Insurance?

I've had good luck with State Farm too. I'm on the lower Chesapeake, boat is small and somewhat newer, but $500k liability and $5k hull insurance is less than $140 / year.

K, then my suggested procedure would be keep some electrical tape handy, and the next time the deck drains plug up put a small piece on the toerail where the water puddles. Do that a couple two...

Re: Heating our sailboat this winter in VA - HELP!

That's a bit of an overstatement, but yes, it can and does snow here on the lower Chesapeake, particularly if we get a nor'easter.

If I were in your shoes I'd get something squared away on heating...

Re: 25' to 27' sailboat

Southern Comfort does have her high points. As I said the fibreglass above the waterline is above average for her age, the standing rigging appears to be in fair condition and the mast looked...

Re: 25' to 27' sailboat

Oddly enough I took a look at that boat the weekend before last.

For her age I'd rate the fiberglass above the waterline as above average. Unfortunately Southern Comfort has a pretty bad problem...
