Re: Can a fridge compressor be installed vertically or sideways?

Thanks Bowdrie,

Since posting, I have found a few statements online that suggested that was the case, but nothing that stated it clearly. Makes me wonder why a manual would not just say this is...

Can a fridge compressor be installed vertically or sideways?

Planning to install a icebox conversion unit (Nova Kool LT201) over Easter to replace a 40-year-old Adler-Barbour.

Just realized there is a much better location for the compressor if it can be...

Re: Green lines through the maps?

Was having the same problem with a new little laptop I bought for the boat. It arrived today. Followed rgleason's link. It took awhile, lots of link following and driver loading and rebooting, so I'm...

Grib files are a blur

I viewed grib files in OpenCPN, but for several reasons I decided to test XyGrib. The wind arrows look fine, but the background land and sea is mud. I am doing something wrong, obviously, maybe a...

Re: Going up the Fraser River from Vancouver to Harrison Lake

Found my policy. Interesting. It makes no mention of inland coverage. Just specifies north and south latitudes, from Skagway to Grays Harbor. Suppose they could get me on knowingly navigating in...

Re: Going up the Fraser River from Vancouver to Harrison Lake

Actually, Pitt Lake was another question, but I think you've answered it. Thanks a lot guys. I'm learning things. Hadn't thought of checking my boat insurance.... will have to find it.

Re: Going up the Fraser River from Vancouver to Harrison Lake

Thanks bccoast.

Didn't realize the current would run that fast up toward Harrison Lake. We'd be going in reverse. I can just see myself trying to justify to my wife the cost of hiring a tug to...

Re: Going up the Fraser River from Vancouver to Harrison Lake

Also didn't mention that we require near 60' vertical clearance and there might be a bridge or two that fall short, but it's not clear.

Going up the Fraser River from Vancouver to Harrison Lake

Not sure if this should be in the destinations forum, but hope it's okay.

I wonder if anyone here has attempted or knows if a heavy sailboat with near 6' draft can make it up the Fraser River the...

Re: Removing bottom paint and saving my marriage

Thanks again for all the suggestions. Nothing to do but get her out of the water and get at her. Cheers.

Re: Removing bottom paint and saving my marriage

Thanks to all for the great advice. I have to do research on some of the products suggested.

Yes, $7,500 was for the entire bottom below the waterline.

Pete, I also thought it was too much....

Removing bottom paint and saving my marriage

We hauled our Tayana 37 for a quick in and out insurance survey. We had to renew and the insurance company insisted on a haulout.

While out, I noticed there was some sort of crack in the...

Re: FireFly Battery Long Term Users - Speakup

2.5 years ago we installed three L16s, after killing many, many LA golf cart batteries through the years.

We rarely let them drop below 50%. PSOC is my chosen weapon of abuse. So far, and touch...

Re: Your take on Spotcast or Fastseas on the inReach?

Took an orientation a few years ago while prepping for a cancelled visit to Haida Gwaii. We have booked a session online for March.

Re: Your take on Spotcast or Fastseas on the inReach?

Thanks. Looks like our reception (and the reception on other boats we met) should have been better on the West Coast of Vancouver Island :)

Re: Your take on Spotcast or Fastseas on the inReach?

Thanks for this. In 2020, we found VHF wx coverage poor up some sounds on the West Coast of Vancouver Island and figured it would likely be the same on Haida Gwaii. Nice to hear it's not too bad.

Your take on Spotcast or Fastseas on the inReach?

We are planning to head north to Haida Gwaii and beyond this year, but unfortunately sold our Iridium phone a couple years ago.

We have an inReach SE, so we were thinking we could use it for...

Re: Seen various people say to never use a phone/tablet for navigation. Why?

We have a Garmin chartplotter that is only a few years old. We also have an iPad with Navionics. The iPad blows the Garmin out of the water, though the Garmin makes a good backup if we ever need it.

Two banks, one Firefly, one lithium?

We have a 12v house bank of three 4v Firefly L16 batteries. We love them. With 200w of solar, they exceed our power needs. The only downfall is that if one of the 4v batteries fails the whole bank...

Is this seacock missing a handle?

This seacock, which looks like a Groco product, is above the resting waterline, but only just.

It seems to me that it should have a handle to open or close. It might be removed but we can't see...

Re: Can you recommend a good haulout in SE Alaska

Yes, timing will be affected by many things. September might not be the end of the world. Boat has to sit somewhere.

Hopefully I will be able to find a yard, book tentatively, and all will be...

Can you recommend a good haulout in SE Alaska

Our plan is to head up to SE Alaska as soon as the border opens, hopefully not too late this year. Would like to leave boat on the hard over winter, collect her in the spring.

Would appreciate...

Re: Disadvantages of a pilot house design?

If you are considering a 60-foot vessel it's likely that none of my issues will have any relevance at all.

In the PH boats we looked at, in the low 40s, just about all the daytime living space...

Re: Planning a Pots and Pans System

We have the 10-piece nesting Magma set (https://www.magmaproducts.com/induction-nesting-cookware). It is brilliant, tucked away in a small drawer. Do get the no skid pot protectors.
