Re: Retirement - Managing your money

He is saying that currently, Social Security benefits are not adjusted based on one's other income sources (at least, not after "full retirement age"). However, this and all other aspects of SS...

Re: Retirement - Managing your money

Having managed my aging parent's finances for the past several years, and being on the verge of retirement myself, I've developed a few opinions that might be relevant:

Financial simplicity is an...

Re: If not GenuineDealz, then who?

I have the same crimper that Jedi linked to (FTZ, based on Rod Collins recommendation). I highly recommend you buy the tool, here’s why:

1. You can make cables the exact length needed, rather...

Re: Spirit 28

Don’t mind at all. In case you’re not aware, it was a featured boat in Good Old Boat a year or two ago.

Re: Spirit 28

I have one. Very similar in specs and interior layout (though reversed) to an Islander 28, which is a pretty good boat to copy.

Re: Nature's head clearance question

Comparing the major brands on line, here are the front to back “footprint” dimensions:

N- head: 19” + 1.5” to tilt top
C-head: 18”
A-head (marine seat): 17.5”
A-head (household seat): 19”

In...

Re: Nature's head clearance question

Yes, the C-head looks like it might be better suited for my application.

Re: Nature's head clearance question

I have plenty of room on the sides, but the front to back room in my head is more limiting. In order to conserve as much of that dimension as possible for knees, I’d like to put the toilet right up...

Re: Nature's head clearance question

That does make sense - many of the installation photos on line are this way. My installation would overhang somewhat also, but the more critical dimension in my case is knee clearance in front.

Re: Nature's head clearance question

That's not out of the question. Do you have a specific design or parts that you recommend?

Nature's head clearance question

My existing marine toilet (Groco HF) needs another rebuild, and the hoses are due too. Thinking about replacing the whole thing with a composting head.

For various reasons, the Nature's head...

Re: 2 L16s vs 4 GC2s

Embedded within my question is another: “Under what circumstances is a cell failure most likely to happen, and does it give any warning signs?” Your post implies that cell failure (if it happens at...

Which reserve battery do you use with LiFePo4?

I’m primarily a marina sailor too, and have also been thinking about installing a LiFePO4 house bank, mainly as a geek project. I’d also like to keep a reserve starting battery, so I’ve thought...

2 L16s vs 4 GC2s

When I setup my house bank several years ago, I sized everything for a bank of 4 GC2 batteries. But it turned out to be harder than I anticipated to find room for all four batteries, so I just...

How do I avoid "discharging oil"?

This statement caught my attention, since Washington State is planning to make Puget Sound a No Discharge Zone in the near future. I went back and read the proposed legislation, and as I thought,...

Re: How do I avoid "discharging oil"?

Yup. That’s one of the reasons why I don’t use the shower. Another being that I can’t stand up in it. And another being that I don’t have the FW tankage to support it.

In fact, I think the only...

How do I avoid "discharging oil"?

You all must have me confused with someone else. As I stated earlier, there is no oil in my bilge, and I don’t use the on board shower, so nothing is being pumped overboard, least of all oil.

I...

How do I avoid "discharging oil"?

Depends on the boat. My shower drains to the bilge. And there is no well under the engine. If my engine was drippy (which it fortunately is not), and I used the on board shower (which I do not), I...
