Transmission fix

Age retired me from cruising, but wanted to pass on a tip that saved my butt.
The front seal on my Velvet Drive transmission leaked bad and I lost all propulsion. Luckily I hadn't left for no parts...

Haven't read all the replies, but if you have a vibration problem with the shaft, I would take the shaft out and examine it. I'l bet there is wear at the cutlass area.

When I was a full time cruiser, the best chafing gear I used was clear vinyl tubing. Can't remember the size, but it was on 5/8" 3 strand nylon rodes. I used a 4' piece on each rode. No slits in it....

The big pulley is attached to the vane, and the lines go straight down, to a pulley, then to the tiller, via a pulley on either side of cockpit.

it's not a pendulum style. Lines run to the tiller. It looks well made, looking at it in person.
It's a horizontal axis vane. In a book that came with it on wind vanes in general, it is the same...
