Re: How to fix these buried chainplates?

Some talking as if stainless steel is immune from rust. I have replaced glassed in chain plates that on the surface appeared fine. Ever hear of crevice corrosion?

If it is not a giveaway, I would runaway and might even it is a giveaway. These are often the kind of boats that wind up killing the dream of sailing and cruising.

You are correct about the encapsulation. When I did mine I did not encapsulate. Did this in Antigua. New plates were beefed up 316 from Garhauer, not the original 304. Also cutout small inspection...

There are no anchor locker hatches on an IP. Access through forward berth.

Cite specific instances. As to stainless steel chain plates I think you will find 99% of production boats have SS. Now if you want to retro or build new with titanium just open up your wallet.

Owned a 1989, 35' IP for 27 years. Cruised and lived aboard for 16 years. It goes to weather no worse than any other full keel. Sailing on any point of sail on any boat is often more about quality...

I Iive in Ft. Myers Beach. The big issue is usable inlets and anchorages.

Clearwater-inlet, limited anchorage
St. Pete-inlet and some anchoring
Tampa-access to Bay, long way to Gulf
Manatee...

If you are concerned about safety install a small electric fuel pump. Put in a shutoff switch. Helps tremendously for bleeding system, replacing filters, or getting you home if Yanmar pump fails....

Cruised nearly 30 years. Grabill Country meats in a can. Turkey, beef, ground beef, pork, chicken. Throw it in rice or pasta. Keeps literally for years. Add wine, carry on!
