Re: Growing ChatGPT use on the site.

There's definitely a skill in getting an LLM to efficiently write code, at least for now. After a while, you learn the errors it's prone to make, and can prompt around them. You get very good at code...

Re: Growing ChatGPT use on the site.

I’ve found a strange phenom. When I direct my engineers to try using a LLM they frequently come away with the impression that it’s stupid and can’t do anything. In contrast, my wife (an attorney) can...

Re: Growing ChatGPT use on the site.

I work in a place where several of my colleagues would fail the Turing test.

I once gave gpt4 a camera photo of a table of figures and asked it to fit the data to a 2nd order poly and...

Re: Growing ChatGPT use on the site.

LLMs have completely changed my workflow in the past year, and the pace of change is accelerating. I now use an LLM to write (virtually) all my code and device drivers. Also, I’ve spun up custom...

Re: Large solar array support beams

Not having studied your setup, how about having two panels swing out from underneath, rather than slide out? Swing out possibly allows you to angle to the sun.

Re: Deck painting while at dock??????

I roll and tipped 2-part at the dock. I did the actual painting at dawn before the sun came up. Multiple coats over multiple days. Maybe not ideal, but it worked well enough. 10 years on and 2-part...

Re: Why hybrid?

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this use case, but the Beta 50 hybrid would be attractive to me primarily to have the electric motor as a reliable backup to the mechanical diesel.

There are also...

Re: Encouraging live aboards

Don't get me wrong... I don't have a problem with liveaboards, and like having them around for color and security. Marinas tend to see things differently.

Re: Encouraging live aboards

I'm wondering if it's actually apples and oranges to consider live aboard a $1MM+ yacht vs live aboard an older <$50K yacht. I don't imagine the multi-millionaire has much problem with the local...

Re: convince me to roll and tip, instead of spray

Mostly it depends on the yard/environ. If you're near other boats and overspray is a possibility, R+T. The other place I'd give R+T the edge over spray is if your hull has the fake wood look (ex:...

Re: How Heavy an Anchor Can I Carry?

If you just want a “just in case” storm anchor, why not get some heavy fisherman (100lbs?) that can be disassembled and stored in the bilge?

Re: Future of marine insurance

Honestly, as long as basic liability remains an option, I don’t really care.

Re: Backing out of slip - suggestions

I have a Panda 40… basically a larger version of yours and have similar difficulty. The spring line suggestions are on point, but I usually now just back out and rotate to the orientation I need....

Re: Fire Island Inlet Update?

Is this just an evening stop off? Yes you can anchor at sore thumb to rest, but there’s nothing there to do.

The inlet is very sketchy, I ran it a few months ago with 6’ draft at high tide. Came...

Re: Am I putting too much solar on my arch?

Inspired by Mads (above video) I’m going to mount two more panels on my hard bimini, but unlike Mads I’m going to have then swing out rather than slide out. Simpler, and gives me the option to adjust...

Re: Stalled engine!

One of my most useful bits of kit is a large wooden closet hanger pole. It lives alongside the shrouds held by bits of PVC pipe. It’s a good 9’ and makes an excellent pusher-away.

Otherwise,...

Re: Exponential Curve for Boat Maintenance Cost?

I’ve gone from 26’ (6k lbs) to 34’ (13k lbs) to 40’ (30k lbs) over the years. Maint and upkeep costs seem to scale approximately linearly with displacement.

Re: Calling all Tayana 37 Owners!

We have some Tayana 37 owners on the Baba group, which is reasonably active.

Re: Shannon 37

Shannon should generally be of excellent build quality, and ought to last a very long time. This one looks nice, and (it seems) fairly priced.

I would agree that you should probably look closer to...

Re: Best 7-8ft lightweight solid dinghy?

With the floats, I (180lbs) can stand on the gunwhale of the 8 without flipping the boat. They are expensive, but I feel they are worth it. They also stabilize while sailing. I've never once felt in...

Re: Best 7-8ft lightweight solid dinghy?

+1 Walker Bay with the float collar. With the sail rig, it sails surprisingly well. I even use a trolling motor with a bullnose "rudder" attachment to serve as a power assist rudder for upwind...

Good luck with the sale. Her appearance is aspirational to those of us with similar yachts.

Re: Helm control while docking

To the OP, I have the same underwater profile as you. Our boats will do a pretty decent standing turn in either direction (though stbd is tighter) if you put the helm all the way over, and kick with...

Re: Best Dinghy Outboard for Children?

I put one of those Bullnose rudder attachments on my 12V Newport 62 trolling motor. I use it as a power assist 'rudder' for my Walker Bay 8 sailing dinghy. Works fine (pretty great, really) for that...
