Re: Rimas 2nd circumnavigation attempt off Fiji

As usual, details are sketchy. He reported on Facebook that his boat was sunk:

Yet also reported that he was docked in Vietnam.

Local media says that he was brought in by fishermen.

Re: Rimas 2nd circumnavigation attempt off Fiji

It's tough to say at any given moment whether Rimas is alive or dead.

Sherri Riggs confirmed that he left Saipan in mid-December. I heard he was headed for Guam, and I heard he was interested in...

Re: Catalina 27 - Replacing New Halyard Lines

I used 5/16" Samson XLS Extra on my Catalina 27's halyards. The "Extra" is Dyneema core, which I wanted for low-stretch halyards. It's $1.09/ft at Defender, so a little under $100 less than Catalina...

Re: Rimas 2nd circumnavigation attempt off Fiji

The helicopter pilot who attempted to rescue him commented on my boat log. It really puts Rimas's concept of "docking by mayday" into perspective:

Re: Rimas 2nd circumnavigation attempt off Fiji

I've been following him pretty closely. (sailingfortuitous.com is me)

Regarding the thread title, I think this is his third circumnav attempt, depending on how you count them. At the very least,...

Re: geoTIFF in OpenCPN?

Update: This totally worked. I was concerned that the georeferencing wouldn't be right (i.e. that my lidar overlay would be in the wrong place) because key geographic features didn't appear to...

Re: geoTIFF in OpenCPN?

I tried a couple different projections. I put them into OpenCPN, took screenshots of both the DEM layer and a chart layer and overlaid them in photo editing software just to see what was lining up...

Re: geoTIFF in OpenCPN?

It's too big (7.5MB). I put it here for download if you'd like to see it:

Re: geoTIFF in OpenCPN?

Thanks for the detailed response. Initial tests are resulting in errors, but I'll keep messing with the projection/pixel size and see if I can make it work.

Re: geoTIFF in OpenCPN?

I don't know how the LIDAR works, but it works. The output is raster data. Each 1m x 1m cell has an elevation associated with it, including "elevations" below the water level. I converted it to a...

geoTIFF in OpenCPN?

Hello,

Is there an easier way to display a geoTIFF in OpenCPN?

The USGS flew green-laser lidar over my state and made very accurate depth soundings of the bottom at 1m resolution. I thought it...

Re: Sailing around the world in a San Juan 24

It's fascinating. Wrong boat. No knowledge. No sailing skill. No money. Defiance in the face of repeated and catastrophic failure. A resolute belief that he's going for a record that obviously...

Re: Sailing around the world in a San Juan 24

Whoa...I wrote that. ;)

I wondered the same thing for a long time, but the DeLorme track is the clincher for me. There's no realistic way that that could be faked. I mean, for 90% of the most...

Re: Hailing an unknown vessel

Yeah, once I made contact, the ship was extremely courteous and helpful. In this case, they were stopped (it was a dredge) and I was simply headed straight for them, so the negotiation was...

Re: Hailing an unknown vessel

When we did our boat delivery, which was the first time we'd ever sailed in the ocean, we were in intense fog. Just as we started to get used to the get used to very different motion of the waves out...

Re: Is a Catalina 22 Seaworthy Enough to Make the Passage from Florida to the Bahamas

There's a big difference between stunt sailing and cruising. Just because it technically can be done by someone in some weather window on a Hobie doesn't make it a good idea, and it doesn't mean that...

Re: Is a Catalina 22 Seaworthy Enough to Make the Passage from Florida to the Bahamas

Yeah, all hell breaks loose if you don't reach escape velocity.

I wouldn't take my Catalina 22 out that far. Mostly because I don't know what I'm doing. But I bet a more experienced skipper could...

Re: Tiller Height

I feel like a lot of this would be up to personal preference. As long as it can do all the things a tiller needs to do (like sweep out a usable range of the rudder, be able the generate enough...

Re: Switching the Prop for an Outboard on a Displacement Boat

I replaced the stock prop on my Tohatsu 5 with a high-thrust version, and I love it. It has wider, flatter blades, and it allows me to not only go [very slightly] faster on full throttle, but I can...

Re: To Blog or not to Blog?

I don't really understand the website vs. blog distinction. All blogs are websites. Some of them are more full-featured than others. Some of them use dedicated blogging software/services and some...

Re: To Blog or not to Blog?

Writing my boat log is probably my second favorite thing after actual sailing. I don't go to exotic destinations or have any tips on how to pack for an ocean crossing, but I seem to be able to...
