I have had similar experience, but was not able to analyze as well as you have. OCPN get very sluggish and the slowness of zoom function is frustrating.

I don't have a Raymarine MFD, but my Garmin has several settings that let you configure the NMEA sentences sent to Open CPN. I would think there is a way to configure your MFD to send NMEA heading...

I forgot to mention one more tip. I found that I must turn on radar BEFORE launching OCPN. Don't know why, but radar doesn't work unless I turn on radar first.:confused:

Joe, When you turn on the scanner can you hear it spin up? If not, I would suspect problem is the scanner. If it does spin, I would suspect a firewall or security software blockage.
