Re: Who Makes the Best RIB

The dinks are made all over. Certainly not all in China. AB is made in Colombia, Caribe is made in Venezuela, Achilles is made in Japan. I’ve had very good luck with Achilles over the years. Caribe...

Re: How Many "Blue Water Cruisers" are There

I’ve always thought there were coastal cruisers, offshore sailors and voyagers. Coastal is straight forward and probably covers the majority of cruisers. Offshore covers those that have crossed...

Re: Entering a sailboat over a sugar scoop transom in heavy seas

No debate in my mind..if it’s rough with waves running thru the anchorage and your boat is pitching the safest place to board is midship and a simple single step attached to the toe rail makes it...

Re: Classic Boats?

Baba 30 is a cute go anywhere offshore passage maker. Good storage for a 30 footer. They actually sail quite well. Depending on the actual condition and how long you were going to own it it may be...

Re: Caribbeans destination. First time Atlantic crossing

We chose St Maartin as we wanted to buy a new dinghy and motor plus plus and it’s the cheapest place to purchase anything in the Caribbean plus they stock lots of stuff. If they don’t have it you can...

Re: Replacement Rudder Cable Advice

Gordy has it figured out. It’s the same wire used for halyards. Many years ago I had to use Mexican clothesline wire and Nico presses to replace mine and it got us to Hawaii with no problems. In my...

Re: Crossing the Caribbean Windward to Panama

You can sail directly across if you wish. The wind and seas can often be a handful in the last part of the journey. It is a bit longer but a reasonable option is to sail direct to the ABC’s and then...

Re: Why do cruisers quit cruising?

Been cruising off and on for about 40 years, took some breaks even started a new business but eventually always came back to cruising. There are so many different ways this game is played that you...

Re: Rudder stuffing box leaking...can't adjust..seal from the outside?

If there is lots of room to adjust it simply back off the locknut and then undo the big nut, slide it up a bit and add a single layer of flax. Now you can tighten that down and it should stop...

Re: Where to sell - French Polynesia or Fiji?

Not much different than selling in the USA as you have to pay fees prior to advertising for non residents

Re: Dinghy tube pressure - under or over?

Many of the dinks I’ve seen around on average are under deflated. Using a foot pump it’s near impossible to over inflate them.

Re: Where to sell - French Polynesia or Fiji?

Got my vote easier in FP but when you get a long distance from major markets you’d better have a well thought out marketing plan, great pictures and absolutely a real honest discription. Under...

Talking Re: Just as a side note on Canadian concrete boats.....

That’s funny! Literally hundreds of ferocement sailboats were built in Canada back in the day. Samson designs I think. Lots of hulls buried in back yards.

Re: Is piracy an imagined concern?

There are known areas that are definitely on the shady side, avoid those areas and use some common sense. There is no reason you can’t cruise the Caribbean safely for the coming years without the...

Re: Keel bolt nuts washer rust/corrision

I’ve changed keel bolts on the hard and in the water and did both one at a time. Started in the middle and worked out to the ends, don’t ask me why, just thought it might be a good idea. The first...

Re: Bluewater cruiser thoughts?

I’m bias to the Hylas because their boats sail well, especially in light winds where something like an IP just isn’t up for the task. Freyas never designed a slow boat in his life, lol.Everyone...
