Re: Beware people who say they have a Captains License but do not.

On another related topic, some Captains have minimal real experience. One captain in San Diego was helping a new boat owner to park his two engine 50 foot boat because the owner was afraid to try.

Re: Coast Guard Safety Alert: LED lights interfere with VHF & AIS radios

You posted a very Good write up and alert for cruisers. The Coast Guard does not mention MF and HF. It can also be impacted. Unfortunately, the signals are radiated like an transmitted signal. ...

Re: SSB HELP for SABA 50

Yes you might be missing something.
Yes we are at the end of the 11 year sun cycle and some believe cycle 25 has already started. However the best communications is not expected until ~2024.

Re: SSB HELP for SABA 50

There seem to be many on this blog that think the US dealers provide the MSSI number.

The dealer MMSI is only valid for short range/safety devices inside the US waters and is illegal to use on a...

Re: SSB HELP for SABA 50

First to answer your question. Commercial ships are required only to monitor the emergency DSC frequencies that the 2nd receiver in the M801E and M802 scan in the background. At this time there is...

Re: Blocking diodes for paralleled panels?

Blocking or as I would call them Isolation diodes do to good things. I have 4 large cells with individual cables running back to my regulator. The cables run in my radar dome an other stainless...

Re: Batteries charging daily but still decreasing charge overnight

I would recommend you check with your battery manufacture to see if you can do an equalizing charge. Not all but many AGMs allow and all of them have build up over time.
The voltage is not low...

Re: Multiple types of antennas for SSB

Height on your boat is not a requirement. If you are still just listening you could put the antenna anywhere including your mast. If you are planning to run GTO up the mast and transmit, that is...

Re: Multiple types of antennas for SSB

Just to listen it would be OK. Recommend you remove your microphone so you are not tempted to transmit, effectively, into an open.

Re: Multiple types of antennas for SSB

I had one of those. It came with my boat. Big unit, worked OK, but took up a lot of room and did not have DSC or email capability since it is 100% analog. So I purchased the IC M802 about 10...

Re: Current state of affairs for HF

Totally agree. They fool people with SOS keys etc. there is only one GMDSS system and millions of dollars were spent just figuring it out with billions putting it in place starting clear back with...

Re: Multiple types of antennas for SSB

I do not have two antennas, but clearly there could be an advantage. However, as one person said two tuners, where you would switch the coaxial cable, would be the best approach. If you want to...

Re: Current state of affairs for HF

Sounds like Spot may have improved. I have not used it in a couple of years and never used the SOS function. Last I used it it sent a message to a designated person. If that person got the...

Re: Current state of affairs for HF

With 50+ years in communications and several FCC licenses, I do not believe I am a "Newbie". Are the software programs I am not aware of, absolutely.

Now that you have identified the name of...

Re: Current state of affairs for HF

Please Define Rescue Services. My Spot has an SOS and while it is a good feature it does not tie into GMDSS.

Good news in the next year or so Iridium and potential some other Sat phone systems...

Re: Current state of affairs for HF

I do not know the app you are talking about, but it would have to control the radio to scan the appropriate frequencies as well as transmit on them. Being an engineer I would never say it is...

Re: Current state of affairs for HF

From what I have seen with regard to installations by "professional installers" in the US at high prices, most do not work. I worked on 3 or 4 hundred in Mexico for cruising friends, most new 802...

Re: Current state of affairs for HF

I like lots of backup. Probably from riding submarines. If you plan to by an HF radio to BS on an old Ham rig will work fine. If it to be part of your safety system a used M802, if you can find...

Re: Current state of affairs for HF

Sounds like a good tool. So what would you use if you hit a container and have a significant leak/flooding 1000 miles off shore to get help? None of that ties into the GMDSS.

Re: Current state of affairs for HF

HF is a live and well, 14300 is active every day to help cruisers. The FCC allowed a waver for the M802 as it is the only real marine MF/HF SSB radio cruisers can afford. Here is what they said in...

Re: SeaTalk interferes with SSB on certain freqs

Clearly the majority of the noise on HF SSB comes in on the antenna. You can significantly reduce the signal picked up from own ships antenna using cores, but it is also possible for signals to...

Re: SeaTalk interferes with SSB on certain freqs

That is true Treblepink as long as the signal is coming in via the antenna. A pulse signal clearly has a significant number of odd harmonics. If it is riding on the power supply DC, then it could...

Re: SeaTalk interferes with SSB on certain freqs

I hope you are remembering all ferrites are not created equal. Most of the snapons at Ham stores are mix type 31 which work great to keep the RF out of things when RF penetrates wires. If there is...
