Re: Problems With Maui Jim Sunglasses

Hi all,

No problems with Maui Jim’s.
I’ve had Maui Jim’s for years and years, probably about 15. Two pairs as prescriptions changed and no problems. Light and easy and no distortion.

Re: Not sure what these are

Hi Jake,
I’m not going to argue about all the ideas for these items. But, my immediate recognition was that these are plugs to be used if a thru hull fails (as noted by another poster).
I would...

Re: How should I protect my steel hull from rust?

Thanks for a great thread and serious comments and ideas. I’ve had steel yachts for about 45 years. My apologies if I tell too much of a story but the narrative history of my experience may help...

Re: Yacht rescue nearish Brisbane, Aust.

One thing about conspiracy theories is you never know what a lack of seriously good evidence will bring up. The posts so far are based on no verifiable evidence, but then arm-chairs never did need...

Re: Single Handed Sailing

Thanks for the question and Thanks for all the answers and ideas. No solution is perfect and, as someone else said, STAY ON BOARD. I solo often, including overnight but usually have 2-3 crew max.

Re: Western Australia Horror Boat Crash

The news reports were pretty wild and many of the posts on this thread are a bit off the mark in terms of the Kimberley.

But, most consistent news is the boat hit the wall, did not capsize and no...

Re: Beautiful boats? (30-35 foot)

Yes, and here is a photo of my Nereia anchored at Broome, Western Australia. AT 36’11, Nereia is a bit longer than the thread asks for. But, clearly an ocean traveller. Yes, have the boat you love...

Re: What do you do different offshore?

Thanks for starting this thread and thanks all for a very informative discussion, lots of things to learn and I won’t repeat the detail.

Offshore is about a totally different experience of sailing...

Re: IS CRUISING DEAD or DYING, STABLE or GROWING?

There is a basic question to be asked first, as noted in some of the posts: how do you define a cruiser? In my own research 1978-82, mainly in the Pacific islands, I started with a basic criteria. ...

Re: Steel sailboat and corrosion should detection and prevention.

I didn’t mention in my last post how I deal with rust. Acid solution don’t do it for me, except for cleaning stainless steel and brightening up the deck paint. I use an Australia product called...

Re: Steel sailboat and corrosion should detection and prevention.

On anodes, be careful to not have too many. I’ve had my current steel Herreshoff for 36 years and early on I thought more anodes was a good thing. It is not. As the quote above says, test for...

Re: Should I keep fridge on while away

Yes, Luke, you got it wrong. The 7-11s are plural, not possessive. Also, an earlier post (not you) had a your for you are, so should have been you’re.

Then there is less and few, which a...

Re: Should I keep fridge on while away

Interesting series of posts but the key question I thought was being asked was: is a fridge system better left on or off (if longer periods) for the fridge machine itself? The power issue is really...

Re: How can I clean fixed plastic cabin portholes

I use Brasso to clean my portholes. Rub it on and rub it off by hand, no power buffer in my case.

BTW, thanks for all the other ideas. What is micro mesh?

Re: Bruce Roberts 35ft steel ketch

Thank you for raising the question about the steel Roberts, Andy. The responses have been mixed but very useful, even to a two boat, long term steel yacht owner. My current Herreshoff is now about...

Re: Repainting a steel hull: how many coats of primer?

I have had two steel yachts over a period of 39 years. In both cases I was advised to remove the zinc rich paint from below the water line (Sandblasted). It appears the zinc acts as an anode and so...

Re: Stop my anchor chain hawse pipe from leaking

I have used, successfully, a system of Vaseline and 'silicon'. First, set the chain in its resting position. Second, the Vaseline is used to line the pipe. Third, you pump a silicon plug around...
