Re: Crackling Sound Below the Waterline on Steel Boat

Don't forget Sea Robins and their cousins. Sometimes sound like underwater barking or quacking. Especially at night the marine world is alive with sound, just like all the noisy critters on land.

Re: Advice for relocating the family (USA)

Any boat that is wind or human powered can race, so this year boats that qualify can race outside Vancouver Is. There are plenty of singlehanded sailboats and rowing boats that will stay inside for...

Re: Advice for relocating the family (USA)

Port Townsend has a well regarded high school, and now the Northwest Maritime Center has started a maritime high school program for kids interested in boats, maritime tradition, trades, oceanography,...

Re: Too many sails on too small a boat

I second TrentePieds. Start simple, get used to the basic sails, then after you've mastered the basic sail plan start learning and experimenting with other sails in their appropriate conditions,...

Re: Entrance to Kilisut harbor (Puget sound) - currents? advice?

I'm local, and the moorings at Mystery Bay are still closed due to not being able to get a diver to inspect them. One of the mooring balls at Ft. Flager is also closed and others have issues. A...

Re: Cascading mistakes turned it to a bad day

As a former teacher I wouldn't have put a novice teenager at the wheel on a gybe which should be a very precise maneuver, unless I was standing by and calmly instructing. Now she's probably scared...

Re: Can your boat do this? Would you even want to?

Thanks for reminding all of us that sailboats aren't made for sitting at a mooring or on a dock in harbor, but are meant to be out there, sailing hard and fast on Mother Ocean.

Re: A Cap for Yachting

Look up Cavender's straw hats. Lots of models. Fit correctly, it'll stand up to plenty of wind, keep your head cool and shaded. And the white hats will scare off those outlaws. (I've no commercial...

Re: Living on a Boat on Land

I liked that picture of upside-down hulls made into roofs for small houses. I guess that's one way to turn a boat into a tight and dry dwelling on land. And Shackleton's men lived under a lifeboat...

Re: Where's the Dometic alcohol stoves?

I agree that propane is safe, provided regular due diligence. But I really like my Origo cause it's KISS. No gas pressure, easy to fill once you get the technique, and no hazard of bilge gas. Any...

Re: YouTube epic boat fails videos

Humans have never learned since our inception; will never learn until the end. Violence, war, and stupidity (the theme of this thread, plus so much more), will always continue to take their toll. ...

Re: Sailing is for Rich People only

If you're looking for regular folk sailing friends they're out there; just have to look. In the village in Maine where I used to live, our yacht club annual dues were $25 when I first got there. I...

Re: PLB Saves Solo Sailor

A little off topic, about drowning while tethered and dragging next to the boat. The studies I saw showed that a MOB being dragged face first can drown in a couple of minutes with water under...

Re: PLB Saves Solo Sailor

If using the lifelines to clip onto or having a long tether, some safety experts recommend hooking the harness on the back of the pfd. So the MOB will drag back-first and be able to breath instead...

Re: About NOT power setting the anchor

A very interesting thread, through all the anger, opinion, and wisdom. The thread made me miss being able to dive on every anchor I dropped (as in clear tropical waters). I wonder if there's a deep...

Re: PLB Saves Solo Sailor

I use two carabiners with two lines to the harness. I just clip the new one and unclip the old when moving across the mast and along the center safely line. I also put on over my PFD a military...

Re: sleep while sailboat heels

New idea if you're one person in a king on a large sailboat. Put in some wooden structures that make the mattress like a curved skateboarding ramp. Then there's a place on the mattress to sleep no...

Re: Identifying a mystery boat

Not a Triton or any of the Albergs, though they are good guesses. Some Tritons went to ketch or yawl rigs. Not an early Pearson either. Vintage 60s - 70s is my guess. Probably a one-off?

Re: Hi, first question about living aboard life

By your living in New Mexico I can understand why you may have never been on a boat. Sailing and cruising is a dream for so many; some have the opportunity to take to the water earlier in life, some...

Re: Did I act correctly in a gale?

2. What is your sea room for all points of the compass,...

Re: So I kind of have a plan and could really use some direction.

Great advice so far. I'd add support for a 'hard' tent for those rainy days with a blow, a great anchor, also a mossy net and a couple of (solar powered?) coolers for food and beer. Your experience...

Re: How much do you know about science topics?

These are not genius questions and going by traditional academic standards, most Americans score in the D or F range. That's very sad and helps to explain the dilemma we're now in (and I don't just...
