Re: What's the one item you couldn't live without on an ocean passage?

Re: Tiller or Wheel Steering

I am surprised how many prefer a tiller even on big boats. Converting over to a tiller on my Slocum would not be a big deal other than taking away cockpit space depending on which tack your on. ...

Re: Tiller or Wheel Steering

Seems like you're more than satisfied? How does she hand steer in a blow?

I once used what I think they call a "comb" to lock in the tiller to take some of the stress off the helmsman. It worked...

Re: Tiller or Wheel Steering

I know what Roverhi is talking about. Lost steering on my friends 39 Cal coming into the Palm Beach inlet. Cable on the quadrant parted because it wasn't double clamped. I am sure it wouldn't have...

Re: Tiller or Wheel Steering

You're right. If you want ultimate feedback go with a tiller. I did that on my first boat, a 35' 6 meter sloop. But If you are on a boat 30' Plus and doing long distance cruising or an older sailor...

Re: Sailboat about to be clobbered by a 100-foot rouge wave (pic)

I would have to agree with you on NOT leaving the boat. If she is not taking on water and not breaking up your best chance for survival is staying on board. But like the Perfect Storm what we...

Re: Want buy seaworthy boat for circumnavigation

You are saying quantity makes it a good boat? Aside from her lack of performance, Neil Pride pointed out she has some inherent structural problems.

Like I said, far better choices out there and...

Re: Want buy seaworthy boat for circumnavigation

Slow and cumbersome by today's standard and she doesn't point. However, the 416 is the better of the the design linage due to increase sail area which in my opinion is still lacking. You have to...

Re: What would you do? 26ft vs 34ft

You don't have a dilemma, you hit the jackpot. If the girl's a keeper and she wants bigger, what's the problem? My wife's a keeper but she gives me nothing but grief every boat I own. Geezzz.. count...

Re: Want buy seaworthy boat for circumnavigation

Stay away from the OI 41. Ask any delivery Captain and they will tell you the same. Great layout, a dog as far as performance....

Re: No.2 Allmand 31

I was the Purchasing Manager for Allmand Boats 1980-82 just before they went out of business. The Allmand 31 was a hand laid up boat and very stout. Her major design flaw was excessive free board...

Re: Fin Keel Strength ?

Of course it wouldn't have happened because full keelers would never show up for the race. But if for example a W32 landed upon the Brambles, it surely wouldn't have lost its keel.

This type of...

Re: Fin Keel Strength ?

What is your point Don, ignore the issue? You are one of those who shrug their shoulders and say it is a non-issue. Anyone who has been around boats and boat yards know differently.

However...

Re: Fin Keel Strength ?

There you go Gypsynurse. I think Neilpride just about sums it up. What you should get out of this discussion is that there are valid arguments on both sides of this issue. Since you are looking for...

NeilPride and Cheechako know what they are talking about. You apparently can't get your head around this issue.

Manufactureres use externally bolted on ballast not because it is structurally...

Re: Fin Keel Strength ?

Jim if you were to re-read what I wrote I said the safest design if grounded or hitting a container or reef is a full or modified full keel with encapsulated ballast. I don't think anyone except KVB...

Having worked as the buyer for two manufacturers I totally agree. This is not to say that there are new boats out there that are being built with a high degree of craftsmanship where quality over...

Re: It seems the more we look and read, the more confused we get about the boat to bu

This thread is starting to sound like Deja Vu all over again. Don’t be fooled into thinking that a 30 year old boat is passé and should be dismissed based on the fact that modern design has come a...
