Re: Rigging too tight - Mast compressed deck!

tap the deck with the back of a screwdriver. If you get a sharp sound, the deck is ok. It might have moisture but it's not delaminated. If you get a dull sound, the deck has started to delaminate...

Re: 22' vs 25' vs 27'

Since you'll be sailing with young children and your wife, you will basically be single handing the boat. Get a boat with an autopilot and roller furling. You will also want a boat with a "real"...

Re: What size motor ?

6 hp is overkill. All you need is a 2 hp. The rule of thumb is 2 hp for each 1000 lbs . I've had 2 hp on a 2000 lb boat no issues got to hull speed. I've had a 5 hp on a 3500 lbs boat again...

Re: Milwaukee 28 volt angle drill capstan system

Ditto to the highly reccomended. No more honking up the main, or grinding on a winch. Just push a button. Can be used on a windlass, main halyard main sheet, jib sheet. Half the price of a...

Re: Looking for recommendations on family cruising 40 footer

My kids loved their pilot berths. They were in the main cabin on each side of the settees. They could still see each other and chat until they fell asleep. My wife and I were in the V berth.

Re: What happened to the "small" "Affordable" cruisers?

I think there are two primary drivers to the trend towards larger boats.

the first is technology. Roller furlers didn't always exist. You had to drag the genoa out from below and hank it on. If...

Re: Good starter trailer sailboat?

You can't go wrong with a catalina 22. I had an Oday 222 not the older 22.

I really liked the boat I had it for several years. It's well built and sails very well. It's a keel centerboard...

Re: Genoa sheet - another attempt

I personally like a 155. Depending on the boat, you can use it in most winds without the main. I'm assuming you have a roller furler, so when the wind pipes up just roll up the jib until the boat...

Re: Can a plane outrun the sun?

Depending on which way you fly, and where you fly, you could end up somewhere yesterday or tomorrow.

Re: Barnacles - More Good Than Harm?

take a quick trip up the hudson to around pougheepsie and spend a couple of days. Barnacles don't like fresh water and will fall off. Back in the day, way back in the day when bottom paint wasn't...

Re: Yet another which boat should I buy

With regards to SA/D, below 15 generally needs 8 knots or so to get moving. 17 is a good performer in the 5-8 knot range and above 17 to get exceptional light air performance.

Windward...

Re: Another first boat thread. Alberg 30, 1975

I've owned several boats. One had an atomic 4 which was a great engine, it has a carburator which may need cleaning after being stored all those years, but who knows. You can pay for a survey and...

Re: 1979 cal 31 opinion

It's a good first boat at a great price, if what the survey said is all that needs attention. Get your own surveyor and go with him when he surveys the boat. you will learn a lot. All sales should...

Re: What can one expect for general condition of a Good Old Boat? Bristol 27.

Check with some boatyards and marinas. There are lot's of boats that have been abandoned by their owners and the yard would love to sell them to you cheap and then give them the work to get it back...

Re: Which of two boats or just talk me out of either

PHRF is really a function of how well a boat goes to weather. It's calculated based on boats going around in circles. A boat with a lower phrf generally goes better to windward than a higher phrf....

Re: Core that everyone thinks is solid

The earlier C+C's were solid fiberglass hulls, later they changed over to balsa core down to the waterline and solid glass below.

Re: Repower costs... what am I missing?

one of the issues boat yards have is that every boat is unique and they have to solve new installation issues on each project. Then every owner has a different idea of what he wants.

Re: Experience of trying to buy a starter monohull

You're trying to buy a boat using the traditional broker arrangement. Broker's don't work for free and usually don't want to touch a boat under 10K as there's no money in it for them.
Go to your...

Re: Recommendation for cable to lock dinghy and engine?

I like the locks that go over the motor clamps to deter motor theft. Several motors were stolen at my marina. they tried to get mine off but couldn't.

Re: Any Comments On 1980 US-27

At that price it probably doesn't make sense to pay a surveyor. Check for water leakage around the windows and main hatch, as that cover is on there for a reason. Also check where the chain plates...
