Re: Timothy Shaddock and dog rescued

If you leave La Paz that time of year in a boat not ready to handle Calvin.
If you leave La Paz without at least a cheap sextant and tables.
If you leave La Paz dependent on an electronic steering...

Re: Self Steering Off Shore

Unless it is mapping upcoming waves it is still reacting with a lag.

The mechanical link from wave to servo rudder to tiller to rudder is instantaneous. It has nothing to do with the autopilot...

Re: Self Steering Off Shore

Our boat is a custom 30' full keeler, barn door rudder, and tiller steering.

She is roughly 9 tons and 26'9" at the waterline.

She has circumnavigated, and after her Pacific crossing she was...

Re: HI->Tahiti Dingbats found after 5 months

More like:

Hid safely in a cove for several months of "missing" time.

Drifted and motored for a while to gain proper distance.

Called for rescue, 15 minutes of infamy, then their shot on...

They are likely telling you it is the difference between it being an overweight load or not. Over weight loads require permits and often have special routing requirements and...

Re: What Kind of boat is this?

I don't know what kind of boat that is.

A friend had his boat there at Ditto Landing. Because of the covered docks sailboats are only tied on the end like that one. The aluminum covering was...

Re: Hurricane Question

A couple of the latest models show matthew running up the coast of Fl, Ga, and SC, then looping back to the SE, then looping around to Canaveral across to Sarasota, into the Gulf and hitting near...

Re: Hurricane Question

If you stay aboard and get washed ashore it may seem like you'd be in a protected cocoon, but there are a few things to consider. All of your systems are designed for the boat to remain upright. If...

Re: A day at Florida's Matanzas Inlet

The sand bar is plentiful due to the recent dredging of Matanzas Pass, and pumping the spoils as beach replenishment.

Since the charts aren't corrected for the new dredging, the spots where...

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

Things certainly could have escalated from the level of concern that still leaves time to calmly call your brother just in case to let him know it's getting rough, to catastrophe, in a matter of...

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

If they had sails intact, they may have maintained control downwind for a while, but in a light boat the first time the boat got squirrely it would be instantly abeam in the trough. If they lost the...

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

What this family encountered can't properly be called "seas".

The shallow nature of that area keeps all wave energy at the surface. The 6 foot "seas" under normal circumstances would be a square,...

Re: Wind Vane: To Have or Not?

Heavy full keeler here as well.

I wouldn't ever undertake a passage of more than a couple of days without efficient self-steering.

If you install one of the servo-pendulum type wind vanes like...

Re: Looky Loos and What to Do About Them

I was taking a nice afternoon nap one day last year, and just as I was falling asleep someone started beating on the hull. Not knocking, but beating.

I hit the deck thinking emergency, and...

Re: liveaboard marinas in south florida

SW Florida offers lots of top notch marinas who welcome liveaboards (for an additional fee).

The Fort Myers/Cape Coral/Fort Myers Beach area has many options.

Much depends on your personal...

Re: Best month for sailing from Key West to Pensacola

There are plenty of stops along the way if your draft is 5 or less.

In addition to Cedar Key, it is possible to hide from weather at Crystal River if you are careful of the tides.

Steinhatchee...

Re: Here we go again…a new Florida House bill would eliminate several popular anchora

If you've been appointed the rude grammar editor now, I believe it is "swiftly" that is generally used in conjunction with "dealt with", and you used the wrong form of "to" (should have been "too")...

I am tuned to the sound when asleep, and immediately wake when the old...

Re: Derelict Boats

There is a boat aground near my current panhandle berth, on the shoal in front of a city Park.

When it first grounded, my slip neighbor had his skiff ready to pull it free at high tide. The FWC...
