Re: Cruising and Modern Conveniences- All is good with Universe

For local cruising much of the extras aren't needed.
For long distance cruising it's not required but it sure is nice.
I learned traditional navigation 40 years ago before the advent of affordable...

Re: Where can I get a Yanmar 4JH110 for shipping to the Maldives?

If rebuilding the Ford is an option I'd do it.
Otherwise the Beta with the BW converter would be my personal choice'
I've had Yanmars, Universals (which are now Beta with Kubota engines), Perkins...

Re: Boats that sat on hard

If the hull isn't oil canning and there's no water inside it should be OK. Maybe a bit musty, but otherwise OK.
Of course it depends on where the boat was stored, if it's in a northern state you...

Re: Exuma accident and death

Unfortunately we saw this happen too often while in the islands. The local Coast Guards do little or no enforcement other than to make sure cruising boats are checked in, otherwise it's the wild...

GAM/McKim Split Lead Antenna

Greetings
While preparing our boat for the trip from Grenada to Newport, RI I had the rig inspected, the local rigger in Grenada found my backstay was in need of replacement due to some corrosion at...

Re: Battery Cable Crimping Tool

Harbor Freight tools has them for a reasonable price, don't know if thye ship internationally. I bought one and had it hipped through West Tech shipping as part of a consolidated order. Worked fine...

Re: With lithium do we y a actually need a dedicated starter battery?

In my case I have a lithium house bank and a lead acid starter battery. The starter battery is charged by a DC to DC charger, it keeps it at optimum charge, which is what lead acid likes.
I also...

Re: Crazy high generator hours: any ideas why?

When we were living aboard in the Caribbean charter generators could be annoying. Mostly run for air conditioning. Some charterers would leave them running while they went out for the day, which was...

Re: Portable generator or not?

If your going to use anything with gas use a gas preservative like StaBil. I've found the marine version to work well. Shut off the gas supply to the carberator and run the gas out before storing...

Re: Portable generator or not?

I have a 1000 watts of solar, 860 amps of lithium.
The boat also has a 6 kw diesel generator, at one point the generator had not been used in so long the pulleys rusted and shredded the belt when I...

Re: Rebuilding older Yanmar?

If your paying a shop or mechanic to rebuild the engine the economics may not work out.
I rebuilt a Universal some years ago and yes they are Kubota small tractor engines with a different air...

Re: How many spare ropes are enough?

It all depends on what your doing.
In our cruising period I carried quite a few lines, two headsail sheets, just in case during long passages.
Enough three strand to tie off to mangroves in the...

Re: Bavaria vs Jeanneau vs Beneteau

In that price range I'd be looking for a Catalina of similar size and set up. But I can see that it'd be hard to find one there.
Better build quality and customer support. Never had a satisfactory...

Re: Damaged anchor?

Depends on the quality and application. I have a Bruce Forged anchor as my main, with a couple others for more specialized use.
Over the years I've seen a number of Bruce copies that were cast, not...

Re: Go small and go now?

If the boat you picked is right for you, then by all means go.
Make sure she's well found and the rigging is stout.
In the 80's the average cruising boat was around 30', and most cruisers did well....

Thanks for the heads up.
What motor do you have in your Cheoy Lee, and what year?

Velvet drives have been around since the 50's, in many configurations, but they usually pair the particular...

Re: How many anchors do you carry?

Depends on where you're going.
While cruising on our 47" CC mono I carried 350' of chain, a 65# forged bruce, a huge fluke which disassembled for storage, and an anchor for hard bottoms and rocky...

Re: Project boat as first boat?

There are still some bargains in auction boats out there but you really need to know what your looking at. I've been told many times a boat was just in need of TLC then turned out to be total turds...

Re: Project boat as first boat?

I've rebuilt a number of boats over the years. Fortunately I've aquired enough odd parts to do another boat.
Currently I'm rebuilding the engine of our current boat. A boat I completely refurbished...

Re: Transmission Make/Model Help

I've replaced the damper plate on mine, when separated the damper pate basically fell apart. Trans Atlantic has them for a fair price, I shopped around and compared.

Re: Marina Corporate Buy-out? Alternatives?

Many of the reasons posted previously have merit.
In our home waters many of the family owned marinas are being snapped up by corporate entities. The fees increase, no improvements are done,...
