Re: Radar is now redundant ?

It is possible (and not difficult) to put fake targets on AIS tracking websites like Vessel finder or Marine Traffic.
Fake targets in real life are possible, but very unlikely to ever happen.

Re: Radar is now redundant ?

As devastating as in BC or in my new home town Sitka ;)

Re: Radar is now redundant ?

I hate to break it to you, but the strongest tidal currents in the world are not in BC, but in Norway. 20+ knots to be precise.

Re: Radar is now redundant ?

Here in Sitka (SE Alaska) we have about 3 to 4 times a year normal astronomical tides that are between -3 and -4 feet. Add a bit of storm surge to it and we occasionally have -5. That is just my home...

Re: Any NON-U-tubers out there sailing?

I've been out sailing for well over the past 30 years and have no income from youtube or patreon.

Budget totally depends on a few things:
- How many miles do you want to rack up,
- What boat do...

Re: Boats trapped in ice

Interesting subject that has me intrigued for many years. The differences between the Endurance and the Fram are mind boggling. The first was just a tough ship that was never built for expeditions...

Re: "Liquor War" between Canada & Denmak

The same 'war' is also fought on the Carey Islands, a little archipelago a little bit further to the south. I visited both places and it is a lot of fun to read all the 'logbooks' that are left at...

Re: Hard chine

Depends on the type of boat and the location of the chine. Ultra lightweight racers benefit from the hard chine in the aft 3rd of the hull with a wide waterline, displacement cruisers will be slowed...

Re: Rainwater harvesting

I'm a scientist myself and know how science works. I also have my boat-water regularly tested in a lab because I use my boat commercially. I often get rain water, but also often water from streams...

Re: Rainwater harvesting

You are aware that tap water in the average city in the average country is a lot more dangerous to human health? Any idea of how much medication, antibiotics and hormones are in tap water, not to...

Re: Rainwater harvesting

We use the deck as a water collection system. The toerail is mostly closed and is about 4" high above the deck. All we need to do to collect rain is to push a towel in a couple of scupper holes, open...

Re: Boat Size For Single Handle Sailing

Bagheera has a jib of 900sqft and a main of 700sqft, the first few years I had the jib as a hank-on. These sail sizes never bother me when single handing and I'm not a particularly big or strong guy....

Re: Sail boat engine choice - electric or diesel

Vicprop is not more than a tool to make a rough estimate. It does not differentiate for power source nor does it take some other very important factors in place.

Prop diameter is mostly based on...

Re: Sail boat engine choice - electric or diesel

I think your 1 to 1.5m diameter must be a typo. That is 3 to 5 feet in diameter.
I disagree with your assessment for inboard electric propulsion. That is used so often and functions as well and...

Re: Sail boat engine choice - electric or diesel

I'm not sure about the thechnical details, but if I look at our electric car (Nissan Leaf) the first half of the charge goes about 3 times as fast as the last half and the last 10 miles takes really...

Re: Sail boat engine choice - electric or diesel

First of all: 18kW will give you almost 5 times as much power as what you have now. Do you really want to go that far with over-powering?

2 hours at 5.5 knots (I assume flat calm conditions) gives...

Re: Boat Size For Single Handle Sailing

I'm sorry to hear that you have such a bad time when you are at sea. I don't recognize that at all. I can truly enjoy every day when at sea. If that stops I will sell my boat.

Re: Boat Size For Single Handle Sailing

The OP wants to buy a boat that can be single handed, he did not say that he wants to start single handed right from the beginning. A boat is a money pit and changing boats on a regular basis often...

Re: Rugged High Latitude Boats?

Ventilation is indeed important. Though condensation is not really a problem when you use the convection type heaters. Condensation will only occur on cold surfaces like window frames etc. Extra...

Re: North east passage (westbound)

Re: Boat Size For Single Handle Sailing

It really depends from one boat to another. I have done a lot of single handing in the Arctic on my own 50' boat, easy piecy. I have also single handed 80 footers on long passages as well as though...

Re: Rugged High Latitude Boats?

I realized I never wrote more points, so here are the original ones:
As for high latitude yachts themselves that are meant for going in ice:
- Ice reinforcement should be all around, not just in...

Re: Rugged High Latitude Boats?

That is indeed true about almost all high latitude boats. They are tough, they are comfortable or they are fast, you can only choose two of the three. Until you engage a designer who knows about the...

Re: Rugged High Latitude Boats?

Making the rudders retract also means that you can't use them to steer the boat. It is when you're maneuvering in ice that the twin rudders and twin propellers are a problem as they catch ice.

Re: Rugged High Latitude Boats?

Looks like a cool boat. Is there actually one under construction already?

I personally think that boats with twin rudders (and twin props as well) are totally unsuitable for operating in icy...
