This was our strategy - we had heard the current could be up to 1 knot, closer to Colombia - so we pointed well east of Santa Marta - winds forward of the beam all the way from Haiti until we made our course adjustment as we approached the coast. We went further east than we needed to, in retrospect. If we did it again, I would still point up a bit, but would make more frequent adjustments, as we approached the coast. I doubt the current was even a half a knot.

Average speed, about 7 kn, including the time we spent standing off Santa Marta, waiting for dawn - bad timing.
