HELP!!! Trimaran + Family of Five on the Rocks - Baja
Hi Guy's and Gals.
I just read this on the Baja Nomads Site as i am a member. Message Reads: Help needed at Punta Cono I am camped on the beach at El Cardon about 22 miles north of Santa Rosalilita and I rode my quad up to Punta Cono to do a little fishing and I came accross a 30' trimaran sail boat on the beach with a family of 5 with all their stuff out of the boat and on the rocks and beach around the boat. They have been there for 2 weeks. Mario Mcleach has been up there to try to help but not much can be done. They need some dry goods like frour, rice, beans fresh water, vegetables, carrots apples oranges etc. They have no refrigeration so only items that will hold up without refrigeration. If anyone is coming this way in the next couple of weeks or so. I set up a Starband unit on the beach here so that is how I am able to get on line. I am going back up there this morn to take some supplies that we can spare. I'll take some pictures and try to post them but I am having trouble getting them off my camera and onto this computer. They are on the beach right at Punta Cono where the beach ends and the rocks start. Larry Continued: Hi all, I'll try to ans all the questions, but my info is limited. Their names are William and Layla, they didn't give me last names. They are from the Los Angeles area and were sailing at night and tried to pull into the lee of Cono to anchor and spend the night but grounded and put a crack in the main hull. They beached the boat and unloaded all their stuff on the beach. They were there a week before some one saw them. They don't want to leave the boat for fear that it will be stripped. They don't have a house in the US, so the boat is all they have. It appears to be a fairly low budget operation. William has hopes of repairing the boat and sailing some where fro repairs. The boat needs to be jacked up a couple of feet to gain access to the bottom of the hull so that some plywood and caulking can be screwed on and seal the hole. I am not confident that this is possible where they are now. When we found them they were in need of water and food and determined to stay with the boat so that is why I asked if anyone else coming this way might be able to bring something. I asked if they wanted me to contact any one for them and William gave me his brothers email address, although the brother is in Germany so help from him is unlikely. They don't need rescuing right now they just might need some supplies from someone coming to this area. They have set up camp on the beach, there were no injuries so they are fine for now. I didn't see a name on the vessel but the # is CF 7048 FH. They are US citizens, when the vessel flooded they lost their electrical so radios are useless. On the lighter side the Halibut fishing was excellent up there so we will be going back in the morn and I will try to get more info. Larry Thread Located at: BajaNomad Forums - "Peace, Love & Fish Tacos" [B]Is anyone near to this area who can lend assistance, doesn't sound desperate yet,,,but as you know,,that can change quickly. Go to the Bajanomad.com and keep updates. I will update also as i learn more. |
Re: HELP!!!TriMaran+Family of five on the rocks. Baja
Is it just my profile screwing up?? or are people ignoring this plea for help by fellow mariners?????

It only just got posted, give it time to percolate. These folk seem more deserving of help than capn jay. Is dockhead going to be in baja anytime soon? ;)

Hmmm, a real sailing family stranded in the middle nowhere yet where is the CF calvary?

Walking, grooming, washing and training dogs down at the shelter. Wish I had more to spread around, but I help where I can :)

Re: HELP!!!TriMaran+Family of five on the rocks. Baja
That's a long way from nowhere. Is there a town nearby? If you cant patch from the outside what is wrong with doing it from the inside.

That said, is there any reason they can't dig out the sand from around the area which needs repairs? |

Re: HELP!!! Trimaran + Family of Five on the Rocks - Baja
How about stretching a temporary cover over the hole and floating it to a safer spot for a better repair? A spare sail with something more waterproof under it, shore the hole from the inside as well, and bail/pump.
Some more info on the boat would be useful, such as size and build material; and the location and situation of the boat. Btw, I'm in Germany, so if I can help in any way from here, let me know... |

Re: HELP!!! Trimaran + Family of Five on the Rocks - Baja
According to the Baja thread they don't need rescuing, but they do need food and water if anyone is in the area.

Re: HELP!!! Trimaran + Family of Five on the Rocks - Baja
What about the sails? Do they care about the sails? Why they are still not stored properly?

Re: HELP!!! Trimaran + Family of Five on the Rocks - Baja
I just talked via ham radio with the controler of the Pacific Sea Farer Ham net. So many are now aware of the situation as well the story has ran in Lat 38 and as I read from the Baja forum, help is on it's way from LA. But I don't know about the boat. Nearest place to hual is Cabo or Ensenada, both of which are expensive. Doesn't sound like they have to moola. But leaving with young kids, no SSB or SSB radio or E-PIRB, sounds very poorly planned and under financed. I'm shure they want to just get out there chasing the DREAM,but cruising is serious business, with many stretches of area's where you truely are on your own. So it behooves one to plan carefully. Hope they meet with better luck.

Re: HELP!!! Trimaran + Family of Five on the Rocks - Baja
Wow. Having seen the photos now, is that a gypsy camp they are staying at? It seems like they're simply using their boat as a caravan... no wonder they don't need rescuing, but only want free food delivered.

Re: HELP!!! Trimaran + Family of Five on the Rocks - Baja
I Copied this from to-days BajaNomad forum.
We had a trip planned to the Punta Blanca area last week so we loaded up extra food/water, not knowing if William and Laya were still stranded down the coast at Punta Cono. After spending some time with Brooks Smith et al at a never to be disclosed location (hah!) we headed south along the steep coast road instead of the inland silt beds and found that they are indeed still marooned there at Cono---on the northwest part of the bay---luckily the safest place to be. We gave them what we could (and still be able to get back home). Bruce and Gay (from Bay of LA?) had come out and put the boat up on a trailer so the damage could be worked on. However they did not have any fiberglass, and had returned home to try to find supplies. The fishermen and Bill (Larry's friend) at El Marron know about the situation and are bringing some supplies occasionally. There was some talk that William's brother was trying to bring down repair material too. Despite everyone's help so far they will soon be low on supplies again---we got them about a week's worth of food/water----more supplies would be greatly appreciated if anyone is in the area. Bill is doing what he can but just has so much to give. William did say he has a Garmin GPS and had loaded it up with navigation charts but the Garmin won't recognize the charts since they're not from Garmin. He has a CD of charts too though and says he will try to merge the two. Again, any help with charts would be greatly appreciated, of course with the hope that they will set sail again. William and Laya are very nice people...there was some talk that they should abandon the boat and get the kids back to LA....but the but is their home, literally, and I think they'd like to see if they can fix it. Will post more if I left something out---brain is still re-engaging into the rat-race. Quote:
