Mast Inspection Hole
Hi Everyone
I have had problems with the wiring at the foot of my Mast . I have friends that recommend I cut an inspection hole at foot of mast so I can disconnect, reconnect and trouble shoot. Thought this seems like a good idea which I have seen on bottom of street lamp posts I feel nervure about proceeding and I am wondering if anyone else has heard or done this Mast is about 1/8 thick 55 feet high:(

Re: Mast Inspection Hole
I have two oval opposite slots 36 x 12mm near the foot of the mast. I do not know about your mast but you must be very careful not to weaken the mast. Normally the mast section is chosen just to carry the designed load and the placement of the slots is critical.

This is something I have been considering as well but for a different purpose.
I am currently in the process of replacing the cabin sole on my Sabre 36 because the subfloor was not sealed and (a common issue on these boats) the limber hole for the mast step would clog. The next place for the water to go is into the floor.
An opening like the would allow me to clean out the limber hole. anyone out there done this?

Just a bump. Does anybody have input on this?

Another bump. I have the same issue as the OP and I am just about resigned to pulling the mast.

If you look at my website (, you can see the new mast step I have for my Sabre. It contains the water and directs it to the bilge.

Re: Mast Inspection Hole
I just spoke with the manufacturer of my mast. I was told that it is ok to cut an oval up to 3inches by 6 inches with the bottom of the hole being at least six inches from the deck...
