Shipping generator
 
Dont know if I am posting in the right spot but how can I get my honda generator from Seattle to Puerto Vallarta? Cant fly with it, Fed Ex? Cant find anything on their website that says yay or nay

Why can't you fly with it? I have checked boxes with a 35 lb miter saw and assorted other power tools and equipment before but that was a domestic flight. Were you told you can't check the Honda by someone.

What if you empty ALL the gas (including drain the carb float bowl) and leave the tank top open for a couple of days to let all the fumes evaporate and drain all the oil. Then pack it carefully padded in a heavy box. I believe Honda only weighs 45 lbs and wt limit is 50 so should make it even with the packing.

Have shipped carburators thru UPS with no problems. Had to make sure there was no fuel or fumes.
Might be best to contact your shipper of choice and ask their guidelines.
Would think draining of all oils and gases and airing out would get it done????

Alaskas site says you cant carry on or check any combustion engine, generators are mentioned specifically. I am just checking other carriers now but dont think I'll find anything different. Will let you know if I do

Would it clean up really well and do you have (or can you get) an original box? :devil:

I would think as long as there is no odor of gas at all and the generator wasn't old, rusty and covered with oil it would be accepted.

Deltas site says it must be in a new unopened box. Might be able to fake it if I could get a box in good enough shape, of course I'd be paying mexican duty on a new genny. Probably still cheaper than shipping

Gee,

I wonder how many advocates of repacking a used generator, would be willing to fly if there was a chance that some one had managed to get it past the rules.

Certainly an explosion on-board while at altitude would not be a flight I hope to be on.

Rules save lives, someday it may be your own.

check with local shippers. Ive shipped used engines masts and other odd items for reasonable costs. just check yellow pages for local outfits their rules are usually much more lax.

Well, if it was done as I suggested, removing ALL the gas including the gas in the carb float bowl and air out the tank to remove vapors then I would have no problem flying with it. By the way, don't forget to drain the oil as well. I drive around with a fully gassed gennie in a trailer or the back of my truck every weekend when I go work on the boat and haven't died yet. In fact I don't think I have ever heard of a gennie spontaneously exploding. Certainly rules are there for a reason but there's plenty of rules that are silly and serve no purpose other than making someone feel better.

Which brings up one of my pet peeves, turn off all electronics for takeoff and landing? If airliners were that easy to crash I would NOT be flying. If leaving electronic gadgets switched on would cause a crash on take off then how come the terrorists aren't reaching into their pockets and secretly switching on their cell phones and Nintendos and crashing planes right and left? :banghead:

I recently took a course in how to ship hazardous material. I was very impressed by the fines and jail time you are subject to if you do it wrong. I would think it could be done safely, I don't know if it can be done legally. Call Fed Ex and ask them. They may carry it on a freight only plane. It will be expensive to ship it by air.

How would yo feel about it then?

Would you excuse him bc sh.t happens?

Or would ya just sue the airlines? and go on with life?

Gee, I can play what if all day long but that doesn't make the premise likely or a valid concern. What if an engine fails, what if the plane is hijacked, what if a meteor hits the plane, what if a passenger smuggles a cobra on board and it escapes and bites the pilot and copilot?

Sure, IF some guy loaded a generator full of gas on an airplane and IF something happened and IF my wife and daughter were on the plane and IF the plane crashed then I would be personally divested. I would also say that the air line should never have accepted the cargo with a tank full of gas.

I'm not saying it's OK for any fool to load improperly prepared or dangerous cargo on a plane. However, just because a rule says a new, sealed box is legal won't keep some idiot from trying to sneak dangerous cargo on a plane in a box that appears new and unopened. I assure you that the TSA, as much criticism as they get (and sometimes deserve) is not stupid enough to blindly accept cargo just because the box is new. Everything going on that plane is checked. All I'm saying is that a gasoline engine, totally clean and empty of all gas, oil, residue and fumes, is no more dangerous than a new generator and I would fly on a plane with it with me, my wife, daughter, mother and anyone else you care to name. I would not want to fly on a plane that accepts anything in a new box without inspection just because the box is new.

I recently purchased a used Honda EU2000 and it was shipped UPS or FEDEX, I don't remember which. The gas had been drained from the tank, and the oil removed. Unfortunately, they did not remove all the gas and packed it with styrofoam "peanuts". Word of caution, gas melts styrofoam, and I am still removing the gunk from the housing.
