There's no such thing as a dumb question. It's only dumb if you keep asking it.
That is a Raymarine autopilot compass. You need it if you still have an autopilot. Also keep anything metal away from it. A client of mine had his toolbox resting on a floorboard above one and his autopilot could not keep course.
