Crete leaving on aboard

Welcome all.

My wife and I are about to retire early and plan for next years to live on our boat somewhere where is nice, warm and inexpensive. Sometimes in a marina, sometimes (more often) on a hook. We thinking about Crete.
Is there anyone here who has some experience from there, who lived or still lives on the boat there?
Thanks
Krystof

Hi Krystof.

I believe there are a few members here with experience in Crete and the eastern Med in general. You might also want to ask on a forum that is European based. Check out the boating forums at https://forums.ybw.com/index.php

I've done Crete form east to waest to east twice back in 2011. (the northern part) Crete is simply much different than the rest of Greede in many respects, you can still find a large variety of food , mostly veggies, awesome land scape, friendly people. There are some but not many well shelters bays ansd in general, it's windyyy..There are few marinas, Rethminos being the newest and best one. The marinas are much cheaper than in Turkey or Croatia. Xania, Ago Nicholas are spectacular.. Iraklios is a waste of time, terrible place... I haven't been to the south coast as the book say it's not worth to to sail. I went there by car and I think the books are right..

Cheers

Thank you for info. Could you tell me, if remember, from which direction mostly blows? We are going to find some chill out place after stressful job. Quiet and free of tourist places are for us. We heard that south is that. Can you explain why south is not worthy to sail and stay on hook?
