One cleat, Many ropes
 
Practical Sailor suggests a loop of rope around a cleat to allow many ropes to be attached to the loop in stead of at the cleat, which would be overcrowded. Please could somebody explain, preferably with a picture. Thanks.

Many variations.

Basically, a loop of Dyneema, often threaded through webbing for padding, is placed on the bottom, and other lines are luggage tagged to it. It can be at the dock end or the boat end.A separate line can then be looped over the cleat or hitched to the cleat without interference, since the Dyneema loop takes very little space.

More or larger cleats are better, but sometimes you get what you get. I do this on the boat end where I need two lines but the cleats are too small. A contributing factor is often an oddball mooring situation, not uncommon for multihulls.

Luggage tag the loop between the legs of the cleat so that it is secure. Then you use the loop like a big mooring ring. You can attach multiple lines to the loop in lots of ways - luggage tag, bowline, highwayman's hitch, tumble hitch or whatever you fancy.

Be careful that you don't overtax the cleat and its attachment. Dock cleats are sometimes just screwed into the dock and overtime begin to come lose. Even cleats that were through bolted eventually come lose as the wood ages and starts to deteriorate. Cleats on boats can also have 'iffy' attachments, being either screwed into the deck or through bolted but with no backing plate to spread the load.

And don't forget the loads can be quite high in a storm, especially if subjected to shock loads. Use snubbers, or as I prefer, shockles to absorb some of these shocks.
