Las Palmas Marina - Some Recent Mysteries Explained

Hi,

You may have noticed not all recent news from Canary Islands - Las Palmas Marina - have been good.

We have witnessed a series of very unpleasant (to say the least) moves by the new manager here. This caused much dispute and actually some resistance from local boat owners. Two owners' associations have been set up and lawyers were looking into complaints too.

Also international visitors were affected, at times refused berths, at times having their boats relocated to docks with limited access, at other times scoffed in patronizing manner by a fresh team of employees brought along with the new manager.

Clearly, despite being a public good, the new manager decided to rule with a heavy hand, and I can attest (our boat spends periods of time there, when we are not in Martinique) SHE DOES HAVE A HEAVY HAND. At a point we were actually asked to 'take our money back and go away'. Something I have never heard in Spain before - a country widely know for its hospitality and good education.

So. We have been asking ourselves : what has changed? Why the new manager and her team are so unfriendly? Well, this piece by www. spanishports seem to cast some light on what we have witnessed here:

El nuevo organigrama de la Autoridad Portuaria de Las Palmas

You may need some google translate to help. In few words: the feature states that the new management structure is explained by factors on the edge of, or suggesting, vested interests setting up ground for activities not necessarily aligned with those of the Spanish state.
