Westerbeke 7.7 genset fuel delivery ?s

WMD 7.7 (older model) having problems with fuel delivery. Engine stopping, requiring check of racor which showed apparent air leak ie fuel level low in racor, then refilled and restarted, then engine dying again. Evidence now shows leak is closed. But lift pump not pumping... much clicking, but no suction. Pump replaced.

Current status: preheat switch depressed, pump clicking, engine starts and will continue running until release of preheat switch. Immediately or shortly after release, engine dies.

Questions: is fuel solenoid (governed by preheat switch) supposed to remain open automatically after engine begins to run (allowing release of preheat switch) ? If so, what prevents it from closing... is it electrical, or positional or???

New problem... just occurred: both genset and main engine ignition switches have abruptly stopped functioning, disallowing any battery charging. Fuse? If so, what burned it out? Preheat switch depressed too long?
