Typically, colored dots and grooves would be crimpers for nylon/vinyl insulated or bare crimped terminals. Without a photo of what you are looking at, it's just a guess.

Does the tool look like this?

If so, which feature has unknown usage?

The colored dots (per the tool in the photo) are to match color-coded butt splices for wire gauge size. In the US that will be American Wire Gauge (AWG) typically. The grooves with numbers in the WIRE STRIPPER portion as to indicate what number, what wire size, will be cleanly stripped by that groove in the stripper.

Wire bought for or from auto sources may be SAE (Society of Automobile Engineers) gauge rather than AWG. Wire overseas will generally be metric sizes. Each uses slightly different sizing for the same numbers.

They're for show

I'm a sucker for tools on sale, so I have a few different types of automatic strippers... but the strippers I most rely on for nearly 40 years are ones like these:

Also decent for trimming the cat's claws.

The yellow, blue and red dots are typically used to crimp connectors onto wires. Those colors are the colors of the connectors (wire size) that you use. The groves are where the connector sets into.

The large crimper grooves are for non - insulated wire.
