Do you live the "Jimmy Buffet lifestyle"?

Nope, just a cruisin' sailor... haven't been in a proper bar with loud music for years, can't keep flip flops on my feet any more, and good tequila has been priced out of our budget.

Maybe this should be posted in the "aging sailor" thread...

Exactly, the Bill of Rights only prevent the government from restricting speech.

It does not mean the general public or private enterprises can't react as they like or "censor" you. Even pacifists may not be able to resist punching an avowed Nazi. . .

Debate is for civilized nerds. Just imagine how fun it will be when everyone starts punching out everybody who says something they donít like!

Only, I guess eventually the opinions of MMA fighters and boxers will win the day.

My lifestyle on a boat has consisted of a lot of sweat and effort, actually. As I gather, Jimmy grew up on/near sailing boats and the cruising life, so that has a lot to do with it. But how many people actually live that calm, laid-back lifestyle on a real, actual boat? Do you live the Jimmy Buffet lifestyle?

Haha! Everyday we wake up and think today is a day of relaxation. But that never ever ever happens. Whether we blow out a sail, or the dinghy motor has problems, or The Windlass stops pulling up the anchor.... There is always so much work to do. It is a job we love and we are happy to be liveaboards, but it is a job that never ends

Back in '90 or '91 I sailed in company with a boat named Loon. It was a 48' Cheoy Lee ketch, I think. The owner, a guy named Jeff, claimed that she had been Jimmy Buffet's boat. Anyone know if Buffet owned such a boat?

Interesting... in 1992 we met a similar boat called Cables Length, owner called "HJ", in Lautoka, Fiji. He also said that it had been JB's boat... wonder if it was the same one?

I havenít been on this forum in a long time. Was getting emails showing posts here and I saw this one and had to jump in. I read every post.

I started listening to Jimmy Buffett in the mid 70. I like his older works better the the newer (90ís Buffett) Parrot Head mainstay songs.

I feel now like Iím sure Jimmy did back in the 70ís. I live on a boat. I work hard Mon thru Friday. I work hard on the boat on the weekends. Sometimes kicking back a few cold brews. Trying to make it writing songs and singing part time.

There is nothing wrong with living a Jimmy Buffett lifestyle.

And some of the people down in Marathon City Marina with a tarp on their boat may end up like Jimmy Buffett someday.

I was told he had a Cheoy Lee clipper 36, which I owned at one time. Not the same one, but a sister ship.

The song seems to speak of a guy "wasting away" by the bottle. Perhaps depressed about a lost love? Anyway, if you pursue your dream, whatever that is and don't hurt anyone else, who's business is it? Live cheap on your old boat or spend all your time and money making it look new, your business. As for me, I was blessed (or lucky if you're an atheist) to spend last winter in a great marina on an old boat that I am learning to maintain and sail thanks to some great old sailors I have met there. Relaxing with an adult beverage and a friend while watching the sun set is great. So, in a way yes I am. Cheers! :thumb:

I donít see any need in going through the whole rot to death in bed, making a mess on yourself, pain, loss of dignity etc.
The things we make people go through sometimes isnít civilized. We wouldnít do that to a dog, yet we do to people.

With him it almost seemed to be a family tradition, I think his Father, Brother and Sister did the same?

Plus I think he was ill, exactly how bad etc., I have no idea.

Just think about this for a second, just say for example I am diagnosed with Cancer, I fight it, but as often happens the Cancer eventually gets to the point to where there is no hope, I will continue to degrade, in pain and suffer, going through whatever savings I have and planned on to support my family with, I will feel shame and my loved ones will witness me going though something terrible and it will adversely affect them for life.

Or while I am still in charge of my physical abilities, I can make sure my affairs are in order and quietly slip away.

Which is more civilized?

To each his own
I guess that depends on your definition of civilized, lol.
Slipping away with a self inflicted gunshot..? Sounds a bit violent to me ...
And how will that not adversely affect your family for life? I donít see your logic but thatís me....
If I was dying of cancer from roundup and I decided to off myself , Iíd be taking a Monsanto executive with me !
Or maybe Iíd be sitting on a small bale of high grade paradise...
But thatís me, hahahaha , always have a plan B.
