Dashboard time

The dashboard time shows the GPS = UTC time. Is it possible to change it in "local" time? Or maybe I can connet it to my laptop (= system-) time?

Aart make a tracker request and vote for it.

That is correct. The Dashboard code seems only to handle UTC time.

It seems the tracker is nonsense. 3 years ago and nothing happens.
The tracker is more or less a cemetery.
Better to address the developer directly by email.
But perhaps they have abandoned OpenCPN already.
As Dave recently wrote there are only a few developers left
and he looks for new ones.

Re: Dashboard time

OpenCPN is still being developed. I have seen nothing like what CarCode is saying.

But there is disagreement on time display. Most cruisers prefer time to be in UTC. I think what you could get is an option for Dashboard that provides an offset for the time display. UTC lovers could set the offset to 0. But remember that the time displayed by Dashboard is not the time as known by the computer. It is the time as sent by the GPS receiver which will always be in UTC.

Re: Dashboard time

So I investigated this a little yesterday. It would be easy to add a time display offset to Dashboard. All times would display as UTC from GPS with the offset added. It would be up to the user to set the offset based on whatever local time is observed on the ship. It would only affect the Dashboard time gadgets (Clock and Sunrise/Sunset). If the offset is 0 then nothing would change from present behavior. But if offset is not 0 then the text "UTC" after time would change to "LCL". I don't know if "LCL" can be translated into 3 characters in all languages so that might be an issue.

Only a few places in the world observe a non-integer hour offset. Would it be ok if we did not handle those cases? Having a non-integer offset makes things a bit more difficult but not impossible. I think no where in the world observes UTC offsets in less than 30 minute increments. Is that right?

Please send some feedback here or through tracker.

Re: Dashboard time

@Dan,

For me (Amsterdam, the Netherlands) it would be UTC minus 1 or 2 hours. (daylight saving time in summer). So, not only added hours but also negative.

LCL, I think it is LoCaL? For most of the users in the Netherlands that will not be a problem.

the TZ offset list:

There are few place with a :45 min offset listed.

Re: Dashboard time

Yes, I will vote Aart. We at EDT (eastern daylight time) are 4 hrs after UTC or Greenwich Mean Time GMT.
EDT=UTC - 4hrs.
If you have EDT and want UTC the formula is
EDT+4hrs=UTC time.
When moving east UTC GMT is ahead of us so we have to add time.

All times are GMT -7. The time now is 07:40.
