Chart Group kap files

I have created a group of English Channel tide flow charts.
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...hannel-kap.zip
I add the folder into OpenCPN 4.4.0
I zoom in to the area using CM93 2011 and the 'Blobs' appear along the bottom of the screen.
Highlighting each 'Blob' shows the correct kap file, but when I try to open them (one at a time, reverting to CM93 chart between each one) only two (maybe three) of the group of 13 will open.
I've tried the same with another group of similar kaps not created by me and get the same result.
Is this a OpenCPN 4.4.0 bug?

Re: Chart Group kap files

No probably not. Opencpn is guite solid reading good kaps. There is a utility that can possibly correct those kaps, but other chart experts must advise you.

Can you please post some screenshots?

Sort of works OK on my 4.4.4, but something odd going on with those charts, were they based on mine?

File size has changed somehow, and scrolling through with cntrl arrow keys doesn't seem to work zoomed out, geo-referencing seems to have skewed a tiny bit as well.

Odd.

They display fine IF you disable quilting (O 4.4.0)
(I've noted that the scale is exactly the same for all these charts. As the coverage is identical, maybe they cannot be quilted ???)

Correction: When quilted, you can display each fine as long as these charts cover more than the computer screen AND you don't zoom in or out...

Odd.

I decided to have a go at making my own chart set, the Geo points I used after a slight tweeking to get a decent alignment are:
English Channel
5148'00.0"N 650'00.0"W tweeked to 51.750000 -6.833333
4812'00.0"N 142'00.0"E tweeked to 48.200000 1.650000

I also tried your set but got the same problem as I had with mine.

I've just tried without Quilting and they all work ok
Screen shots to follow

Re: Chart Group kap files

Working with a stack of charts with the same parameters for position, size and scale, how the system shall decide which one to present?
Would require some indicator that there is a stack - multiple charts for the same site - and a manual way to select from the stack.

We have seen a similar situation for vector charts in the Netherlands where charts do coexist with different levels of detail. How shall OpenCPN know, which one the users wants to see?

Ideas?? Other systems who have a solution for this?
Chart groups are one. But do not solve the OPs situation.

Quilting On - CM93 chart still shows but can't switch within groups

Quilting Off - CM93 chart now just an base outline. Hovering cursor over a 'blob' gives a preview of kap file.

Re: Chart Group kap files

I have downloaded and checked the charts. On Ubuntu 14.04 + OpenCPN 4.4.0 I have no problem showing cm93 between each of the charts. Perhaps it's a Win problem?

The general problem "bcn" mentions is very difficult. If cartographers kept to normal conventions, showing more details on larger scale charts than on smaller, thing would be easier.......

In this case, 13 exactly equal tidal charts, from O's point of view, there is a trick using the fact that O shows the largest scale chart furthest to the left in the chart bar. When converting these charts, just change the scale a little.
The scale of these charts are 4196553 (shorthand for 1:4196553)
Set the scale for HW -6 to 4196553 - 6, HW -5 to 4196553 -5 etc.
This change will have no practical impact but the charts in the chart bar will be in the correct order.
To see how this works just check the pilot charts.

I confirm. No problem with Windows 10. More, I can zoom + or -, no problem . I can display each of all kap charts and toggle from kap to CM93.

Re: Chart Group kap files

It seems that any edit that I do to the kap file renders it unusable on saving.
I'm using Notepad to edit and tried saving as ANSI and Unicode.
Any suggestions?

The edited I made was to add a Chart Name

Because the standard MS Notepad is applying the Windows end of line terms, not the mostly used once for data sets in the rest of the world.
So it will screw up your file.
Notepad++ not. But hey, if you like you can use it as well to deliver Windows encoded files. No discrimination...

Worked for me before..

https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ml#post2049231

I've made a group for each set of tidal charts, so solent east is one group etc. Select the group then zoomed out, chart disappears, click on left hand blue rectangle on the bottom of the screen - chart appears. Then use ctrl/left right arrows to scroll through the charts.
Bit clunky but works on this win10 laptop anyway.
Panning seems OK but zooming the chart dissappears, and you need to click the blue rectangle again.
