Chart Plotter Software: C-Map or Navionics

I've got a Zeus Touch (gen. 1) chart plotter running, I believe, Navionics silver software. I feel the need to upgrade to a more robust software, but which one is the question. So what's the answer old sage ones?

Do you mean charts? I know C-Map makes charts, and I think I've read that Navionics makes charts... but those probably aren't the built-in software applications that run your plotter...

Where are you sailing?

I just upgraded my Zeus 2 with C-Map wide charts for the carrib. Very happy as they include Explorer and Wavy line for Bahamas, plus Active Captain data. So far they have been very accurate.

Yes, charts.

I use C-Map chart chips on my Furuno plotter and have been very happy with them.

For us, selection of the chart source depends upon where we plan to cruise.

We also have a Zeus Touch and happened to choose Navionics because they had the coverage we needed [Alaska and BC Canada] all in one for the best price in 2014.

When we get ready to go explore other areas, we will revisit who has the best coverage, then features. [e.g., Navionics or C-Map; assuming we are still using a Zeus chart plotter then...]

With the recent addition of Active Captain [AC] to C-Map, that could add to its appeal [even though you only update the AC when C-Map is updated, unlike most AC integrations that update AC data independently...]

Navionics has the supplementary, crowd-sourced sonar data in its favor. But, it will never have AC because it is trying to do its own [anemic] version of same, which so far has no data anywhere we travel, so it is useless to us. [But we have fresh AC data on our back-up nav systems, so that doesn't matter...]

We also run other charting software as back-up on other devices so we have several to compare at any one time. [e.g., OpenCPN, SeaIQ, etc.]

If the back-up charting systems are also of interest, here is our page with more details about our computers and software- which includes a complete listing [with links] of the secondary charting systems we find ourselves using most often.

Best wishes finding what best suits your needs.

Cheers!

Bill

From RI down East coast and then to the Bahamas.

sounds like your c-map is working fine (if it's not broken don't fix it)

I have Navionics silver and it doesn't give the detail I would like to have; so I'm shopping for a more robust chart package.

For what it's worth, I had a Standard Horizon plotter on my boat and a couple of years ago sailed my lift-keeler up to Fareham Motor Yacht Club at the top of Portsmouth Harbour. According to C-Map I was sailing the last mile over land whilst Navionics on my ipad still showed me sailing in shallow water and also showed the club jetty (drying) and nearby moorings. I have since updated to a Raymarine E7 plotter with Navionics Gold and am very pleased with it.

I have also had a Raymarine E7 with Navionics chart card for the last 12 Months. It has been very accurate between Grenada and St Martin so far

Then NO navionics for sure. They have very bad Bahamas charts. Go with C-map which uses Explorer data. Explorer charts are the only way to go in the Bahamas.

Went with C-Map; so far so good. The Explorer Charts convinced me. Thanks all for your feedback.

Travellerw, can I ask. I have the precious release of this chart on my zeus2 without active captain. Just returned from Bahamas and found it very accurate. Also was running Garmin bliuechart on an iPad to get active captain. Garmin allows you to turn off the active captain data. Can you do the same with the new cmap version? Sometimes the icons get overwhelming. But love having active captain reviews.
