ABI sea tiger windlass knock off help
Hello,
I'm working on a older seatiger windlass. It's been dissembled by the previous owner. I've got it back together and there are no missing pieces. The 2nd speed doesn't engage when I try to operate it. However it will function great if I remove the upper ratchet shaft. This leads me to believe that orientation of the rachet bushing might be wrong. (I've tried a few to no avail.) Maybe spring tension? Any thoughts? Thanks. S |

Here are two videos on the windlass.
Any help would be welcome. |
Re: ABI sea tiger windlass knock off help
It has been years since I tok apart and later assembled a Sea Tiger, but what I Remember is that too much grease will impede proper working.
Also I remember that the factory "exploded" drawing of the parts had an error in it. |
Re: ABI sea tiger windlass knock off help
Thanks for the reply. At the moment, the gears have been degreased and have a light coating of WD40. I planned to use gear oil to lubricate the system once I get it working. Do you recall what the error in the factory exploded drawing was?
Thanks, S |

Just a question about the title of your thread. Did ABI make your Sea Tiger? I always thought it was Simpson Lawrence.

John,
My windlass is a ABI clone of the SL windlass. As far as I know the parts are interchangeable. -S |

The SL expert on the Sea Tiger pointed it out while I was on the phone with him. He recommended I use motor oil on the pawls and springs, then salt-water wheel bearing grease in the rest of it. (Ace Hardware) Get new seals, I don't anything else really wears out in the 555. G'd luck. |
