Unbelievable amount of maintenance on a wooden boat.

Custom built means one-off means lots of non-standard solutions, means lots of money.

Custom boats are very hard to sell. Wood custom boats are very, very hard to sell.....

My thoughts are following, but first I will state that I have not owned a large wooden or composite boat, so others on this forum with that experience will have a different point of view.

That is a nice looking boat for a spray boat. One of the nicest interiors I have seen on a custom spray build, and I have looked at many online. Most look much worse.

But online photos only tell part of the story and I have seen many photos online that are being used to promote a boat, yet the photos may be old, not current condition.

Wood boats are more rare today, and so are for people who are willing to deal with their particular needs. Cold moulded boats can be sound and strong and I find them interesting. I look at wood boats and cold moulded boats as special cases.

While I find this boat appealing because of the nice interior and the handsome exterior, I think the price is too high, when compared to other boats available at that used asking price.

But, like unusual looking or rare breeds of dogs, there is always a potential owner out there willing to pay the price or wanting something different.

Good luck on your decision, and if you do purchase her, I hope you will contribute to this forum with posts about her. :)

I'd have to first ask what is it you love about the boat that makes you want it?

The price?

The design?

Then I'd ask what do you know about this boat? Who built it? What other boats has this builder made? What is the background of the builder?

Like what has already been expressed, this boat will be a lot of work. A highly skilled craftsman with lots of boat experience and lots of time on his or her hands might consider this. If you are anything less, you might want to reconsider.

Not all wood is the same though. This looks a cold moulded hull. If done properly should not need more maintenance than a GRP hull.

Wood is wood and doesn't last forever. Consider thru hulls, shaft log...

Most folks here have never owned a wood boat (myself included), so you won't get much love for wooden boats, or the prospect of buying one, here. Better to post your question on the wooden boat forum, where your likely to get answers based on experience.

Like most here, I wouldn't want a wood boat either, just based on keeping up with an acre of teak on deck, let alone not knowing the first thing about maintaining the hull. Old wood boats sure are lovely to look at though, so I'm glad some buy them!:smile:

Jim and I have a modern composite construction timber boat. It is strip planked western red cedar, covered in glass and epoxies.

That ad said "wood". That's not enough information. If she is strip planked or cold molded, either way, they should be able to tell you what the "wood" is, and if they're not, then it probably isn't modern construction.

It would be useful to know if it is home built. And if so, what skill level the builder had when he started.

Strangely, I thought the cabin top looked too high for a Spray, so I'm wonder who designed it, too, and whether the builder "stretched" it without it being properly designed.

I have a sense it is way overpriced on the asking price.

What is missing from that ad?

Well, when were the sails replaced?

What services done on the engine?

What condition is the rig in?

How long has it been sitting? ["Ships and men rot in port."]

As she doesn't looked loved from the outside, what condition is she on inside? [odors, roaches, etc.?]

Maybe those kinds of questions that I raise here are what prompted the previous poster to say.....a psychiatrist. It looks like an 'orrible sack of worms to me.

We are totally new to wooden boats so -- based off the initial comments, we think perhaps this one is not for us.

We found another beauty later on the forum (with a fiberglass hull) and have our hopes high she will work out. :) She's a boat we've wanted for years.

You are absolutely correct ! Anyone who says otherwise does not understand cold molding. Some of the finest, strongest, most expensive sport fishers in the world are cold molded.

:thumb:I saw this boat at dock earlier in year. Was not impressed and didn't even know the sale price at the time. Many wood boats in Turkey, but not many well maintained in my opinion. Plenty of good fiberglass boats with heavily wood finished interiors if that is what you are after for less money and overall maintenance.
